For back-up you need three copies, with one held remotely, away from your home.

1 - Keep a copy on your computer.

2 - Get an external hard-drive and copy to that regularly (weekly/monthly).

3 - Keep a copy on a "cloud" service of some sort e.g Dropbox, BT Cloud, Google Drive, Onedrive etc. ....whatever you have an account with.

...don't use USB sticks for anything other than short term storage or moving files, they fail far too often.
  • I've tried to create new volume using disk manager but I'm getting a message saying the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable.

    Any suggestions?
Don't try to create another partition Format it again, once you are certain that you have good copies. Then copy lots of stuff on to it to see if it is still working and usable eg copy (not move) then try and open them. If not it is probably on its way out

  • Thanks everybody for your help with this. I'm just grateful to have my photos back - good lesson learnt.

The 'new' USB is coming up as 'corrupted and unreadable' so I think the best place for that is the bin!

The best place for it is returned to wherever you bought it for a refund.

Was it Amazon directly or a reseller? Fulfilled by Amazon?
