Can I recover all my lost photos?

Did you also have google photos managing your camera roll? I dont get why you deleted them from dropbox when you only had them on a flash drive

Thank you everyone. I've managed to retrieve all of the photos from the 8GB USB stick. At the moment I've got them saved on my computer but need to have a back up plan - anyone want to recommend a way to back them all up please?


Also, what do I now do with the 16gb stick that doesn't work?

I keep copies of all my photos on my desktop hard drive, on a removable drive and cloud storage too.

The 16Gb drive might work after a full format. It's worth a try.

Google photos will let you back up an unlimited number of 'high quality' photos.

High quality means they are limited to 16MP, anything over that (pretty uncommon if taken with a phone) is scaled down, anything 16MP or under will be run through googles compression algorithm which is very good and I defy anyone to spot the difference short of a forensic examination. Or you can have 10gb of 'original quality' storage via google drive.

If you don't want Google having access to your pictures, Flickr offers 1TB of photo storage for free, although I don't know what the long term future of that platform is since Verizon bought Yahoo (Flickr's previous owners).

At the very least either of these options provide an acceptable remote backup in addition to any local backup schemes you might come up with.

If you don't have at least two copies of a file, you don't really want to keep it.

With your 16GB only plugged in, type in "disk management" in the Start menu and click on "Create and format hard disk partitions" which should appear.

You should see your USB drive listed. According to how many drives you have, the disk number will vary - but it should appear as removable, with about 14.90GB written underneath.

You should see the type of file system being used listed in the drive's description. This will probably be FAT32 or NTFS, or perhaps even exFAT. Maybe upload a screenshot of this window so we can how it is setup.

If there is nothing valuable stored on the drive, just right click the partition and choose "delete volume". After this, you should then have the ability to create another partition or volume.

I would use H2testw to test the drive before storing anything on it.

Thank you. I've done up to 'delete volume' but don't really understand what to do next to create another partition.

I've tried to create new volume using disk manager but I'm getting a message saying the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable.


Any suggestions?

You said before you had Dropbox put them in there and leave them

OP I'm another fan of Google Photos.

I have a folder on my PC that I place photos from my Wife and Kids phones into, and they're automatically synced and uploaded to Google Photos.
Any photo I take on my phone is uploaded instantly.
