Seems unlikely given what the OP wrote previously. And I don't thnk it would do that anyway, if it was only 2GB it should say that there's not enough space to write the files.
OP's experience fits with this perfectly. A very common way of making fake USB drives is to alter the circuitry so the computer thinks it sees, say, 16GB, but actually there's only a 2GB memory chip inside, and it will write over that chip 8 times.
Generally its then possible to read the last 2GB of data which was written, but that depends on the data to some extent.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
how did you take the photos? if on a phone or smart camera they may still be available via google photos, apple photos, dropbox etc
hope you get them back ok and don't have to learn the hard way about not keeping photos on flash drives/sdcards"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -

Any chance its a fake one? possible only 2GB so copying 8GB onto it will overwrite everything over and over.
It's a Kingston that I got from Amazon. It is showing as having used 8gb of space and having almost 8 left.Biggest win: £10,000 from PepsiFavourite win: Handmade jewellery worth £1000ITV Winners Club Member #1Check out the ITV Winners Club in IWIWIWI shall write in ever decreasing circles until I have nothing left to say0 -

A lot were taken on my phone, transferred to Dropbox, then to my USB. I deleted them all from my phone and dropbox.Biggest win: £10,000 from PepsiFavourite win: Handmade jewellery worth £1000ITV Winners Club Member #1Check out the ITV Winners Club in IWIWIWI shall write in ever decreasing circles until I have nothing left to say0 -

So some of these were taken on that phone, and others taken on the previous handset? Were they not all deleted on a single date when you moved them to the memory stick?Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0
