My First Credit Card

I have reached the grand old age of 59 without ever having, wanting or needing a credit card, but I'm going to Australia and New Zealand again soon and really need to get one. When I went last time I was shocked by the amount of bank charges I incurred, so I think a credit card is needed.
I will set up a direct debit to pay each month, but I don't know which is the best one to get. I've looked at the reviews but find myself going round in circles.
Any advice or recommendations gratefully appreciated.

Try the eligibility checker to see which travel credit card you are likely to be accepted for? As you have not had a credit card, your choice for a specialist travel card might be limited

I've always used Halifax Clarity CC for overseas spending. No foreign currency transaction fees and widely accepted0 -
I agree with Superscrooge - you may struggle to be accepted if you have no CC history but worth trying an application if your results are fair on the eligibility checker. Although Aqua should be reasonably easy to get anyway.
Should you not be eligibile for a CC, it may be worth reading this about pre-paid cards https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-moneyI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Budgeting & Bank Accounts, Credit Cards, Credit File & Ratings and Energy boards.
