I always have a 999 points score and never any problems but now my score went down dramatically to 782.
The reason why this happen is because It is showing me that I have one account CAPITAL ONE showing as Default.
What happened I had with them a long time ago a credit card which as far I was aware had been paid in full and account was closed but it seems it wasn't.
I have moved to my new house which I bought 2 years ago. For all this time I always had 999 points and I never received from them any emails, calls or post.
Finally on 22 April I have received email stated balance on account not even debt. I was really surprised about it so I contacted them asking what it was.
They advised me that I had an outstanding balance on my account. When I asked them what the balance was for they were unable to provide me with any details. I did not want any problems to be caused by this so I agreed to pay them the money - I'm working and my salary is over 80.000£ a year and to pay this balance was not an issue for me if it meant no further problems would be caused by this. I told them I wanted the account closed properly this time and I requested they posted confirmation of this to me, which I have still not received. I asked them that if there was a problem why didn't they email me or call me as they had all my contact details. They said that they have been contacting me by sending information to my old address by post., which has never been forwarded to me. They said they cannot do anything and is not their problem - As far as I was concerned I had already closed the account which is why I hadn't told them my new address when I moved because I thought the account was closed some time before and it was never showing on my credit record as an account linked to my name so I was unaware of it. No attempt had been made to contact me via email or phone either. In addition to this the email below does not show that this is an old balance/debt and I had never received an email previous to this.
After this my score went down and it is effecting everything that I am doing now. I have a family, I'm working for a good employer earning over 80.000£ a year but when I was trying to remortgage my house my application was refused due to the credit search. The reason why I'm writing this is to see if there is anybody here that can help to rectify this or if you can let me know who I should contact to get this issue resolved urgently? Please advise, thank you.

The default appears to have been correctly applied as they wrote to the last address you gave them. At least you have now settled it.
Your credit score is meaningless, so that can be ignored. However, lenders will obviously view the default negatively, but that will improve over time.0 -
You don't know what to do?
Ignore your score. Thats the first thing.
Either your paid your card in full, or you didnt. Who made the mistake in the final payment, you or Capital One?
I doubt one small default in an otherwise perfect history is causing you such problems.0 -
They only contact the last address you've provided them and are also kinda required to do - so generally do not bother with phone/emails as it's not worth it in the majority of cases.
When you closed the account first time, did you get a letter confirming this? And I don't mean do you have it still but did you ever get it? Or any confirmation at all?0 -
Ignore the score - that is only the view of the credit referencing agency on how they think you appeal to lenders.
You need to find out if the error is yours or Capital Ones' - was there a balance on the card? Were you carrying a balance just before you closed the card?
If the default is applied accurately (which it appears it is) then you need to give it time - the further in the past it is, the lesser the impact.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Budgeting & Bank Accounts, Credit Cards, Credit File & Ratings and Energy boards.
