Ok, i can't even do a Windowd update without doing something about the storage so I'm thinking of seeing if I can return the laptop, saying its unwanted Xmas pressie and investing a bit more in a laptop with more GB. If I run a "recover" is that enough to set it back to complete beginning as if I've never used it?? Have to be certain before returning it!

Did you buy it on-line? If not, it may be difficult to return it if it isn't faulty. They will see that the box has been opened. Now cannot be resold as new, only refurbished.

As aforementioned, you don't need to invest more in a laptop with more GB, you just needed to buy a better laptop for the money in the first place....asking here in the first instance.

Have you attempted the Factory Reset? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmGkF0ZaWV0

If I reset the pc that will delete anything on there won't it? I haven't saved files, only a few photos on desktop which I deleted once I'd put them on a usb but I'm thinking more of temp files from looking on Internet etc. A restore completely clears it as if it hasn't been used doesn't it?

I bought it online from a supermarket.

Given she doesnt have a time machine, surely investing more in a laptop with more GB is exactly what she needs to do now?
  • Have you given up on this laptop now?
Using the clean-up utilities and buying an SD card would have at least made it usable for you.

A Windows reset might get the operating system back looking superficially like when you first started it, provided it deletes your user account and presents the initial 'Welcome' screens.
But it won't completely overwrite your files from the drive, and someone in the know would likely realise the computer had been used before.

Emptybox - I am not entirely sure that buying an SD card or usb for extra storage is going to solve my problem.

I need to load iTunes, my security software, Microsoft office and be able to do the usual
Windows updates that are automatically prompted.

If I knew for sure that I could buy a large, say 200+ GB storage device to leave plugged in and I could save any additional software on it (including Windows if needed) then I would do it. But previous posts have said there might be an issue with saving certain software to an external device.

Im worried about wasting more money.

If within fourteen days, you can return it. Within a month, it is at their discretion.

No. No need to invest more than £250 to get a laptop with more storage.

So the option is to get a refund and buy a better laptop for the £250 or do the clean up/SD card thing.

The problem is that the OP is not listening at all. So best she just run the Factory Restore and takes the thing back.

    For a similar spend; https://mcscom.co.uk/product/dell-inspiron-15-7537-i7-4510u-2-00ghz-8gb-500gb-15-6-fhd-touch-w10h-1yr-rtb-wty-xmln721/

It's a refurb, but the HP is a children's toy by comparison.

Ah right, with you now. I had it in my head she bought it for £129 - which is the usual price point for stuff like this. The £250 she paid for it is just plain mental
  • I may be wrong , but I am sure that windows update will give you the option of using the spare space on an external/second drive for the updates, almost certain that's what I did on my virtual 10 preview machine.
