Hi All,
New to the forum but been reading through this thread for a while now, which is a great help. I just thought I'd introduce myself and our situation.
Basically my wife and I are looking to set up an ironing service from home in the Sunderland area. My wife is Thai and only moved to the UK in November. She does not feel confident enough to go out to work yet so I've been looking at ways for her to make some "pocket money" for herself from home. An ironing business seems ideal and is kind of related to her previous jobs back in Thailand where she worked as a maid in hotels and guest houses, but also did ironing on the side for a little extra cash. I work full-time so the plan is for her to do the ironing from home and I'll do collections/deliveries in the evening after work.
I've already looked into how to register her as self-employed etc and I think we are almost ready to go. I guess I'm just looking for some advice on how to make the next step to getting started. I have a friend who can knock us up a basic website. Any recommendations where we can have some flyers designed? Also where is best to buy suppliers from? Are those ironing starter kits good value when first starting out?
Any advice more than welcome

Hi all
I'm just doing my dreaded tax return and just wondering what else I can offset against my profits? I've got 40p per mile for fuel/wear & tear, gas, elec, equipment, advertising, mobile phone % and landline phone but I can't think of anything else. Someone mentioned wear and tear on equipment to me but I'm not sure?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!0 -

I got my cards from vista print..they often do deals and I think I just paid for the postage. I did my own price lists ad flyers on my pc.
I started my ironing business about four years ago and often have to turn people away now, but it does take a while to build up the customers.0 -

Thank you, I have looked on Vista print and think I am going to go with them! Have you got any advise on setting up a regular customer base or any advise at all really.

I'm just about to start mine today..
Once I look through previous years and get started, I'll let you know if I come across anything different. Only thing thats come to mind so far, are you member of FSB?Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass,it's about learning to dance in the rain.0 -
Accidently happened across this forum. I LOVE IRONING. Will try & read all the posts, have gone back 10 pages but in no order so will start afresh.
I have just finished a P/T seasonal job & not looking forward to signing on again. Need to find work, min 16hrs per week to qualify for WTC.
Can I make a living from this? There are various services already in my area, most appear to be business premises inc washing services too.
I have the time, would still like to be a SAHM as much as possible so this seems viable. I've a large car so transport not a problem.
What is a realistic set up fee for this venture?
What areas should I have covered, esp insurance wise (clothing & car)?
Good luck to those just embarking on their venture & well done to all those 'mature' business' offering advice.0 -
Any One got any advise on setting up a website?
