Hello,
What an excellent thread!
I am in the Northampton area and lately I've been getting quite a few enquiries from people who are out of the area that I cover, or who want bedding ironed which I don't do.
If any fellow ironers are in Northampton and would like me to refer enquiries on to you (i.e. the ones for areas I don't cover & bedding etc) please send me a PM. I am in the NN5 (Upton) area and don't travel to the other side of town - Ecton/Weston Favell etc.

Hello!!
Fantastic info on this thread! Also looking into starting an ironing service from home. Im a mum of 2 little girls, one at school the other just about to start pre-school. I currently work evenings and weekends at Sainsbury's - but would just LOVE to have my own little ironing business!
I just havent got a clue what to charge????
I have read that its best to charge per item.
What would I write on leaflets/business cards??
Really getting excited about all this, it seems to be working well for most of you on here.
I think I would start by leafleting and cards in post office/newsagents to begin with.
Also offer a free pick up and returns service :-)
Also, how do you return the items?? on hangers or folded??
I live in the Portsmouth area if anyone needs an ironing lady!!!! :-)
Thanks in advance for your replies to my questions!

Hi Jules,
Definatly charge per item it's alot easier.
On your leaflet/business card, put what you charge what you iron (like bedding)
Your name, phone number preferably a landline and mobile possibly a email address, make sure it's eye catching but clean too
We do free collection and delivery but if someone isn't in on delivery we charge £5.00 to make a return journey.
We ask customers to provide hangers for the stuff they want hanging and the rest we will fold.
I hope this helps you
If you have anymore questions please feel free to pm me

Hi guys
What a great thread. I have been thinking about doing an ironing service for a few weeks now and have been doing some research when I came accros this thread. It has been enormously helpful.
One thing I am trying to find a solution to is how do you deliver hanging Items in an ordinary car?
also I am trying to choose a steam generator iron but there are a lot to choose from, if anyone can recommend one I'd be grateful.
I am still trying to think of a good name as well, I thought of a couple but when I googled them tons of the same came up!
Your help would be appreciated.

Hi Jen,
I deliver hung items back to customers in my Ford Focus - what I did was I 'made' a rail by measuring the width of the inside of the car and cutting a metal pole down to the same size. Then I attached it between the grab handles just above the car's rear passenger windows. I had to use a metal pole - the pole from a mop I think it was - as a plastic rail (like a shower rail etc) couldn't hold the weight of the clothes.
HTH.

I am not in the process of starting up an ironing business (but have thought about it), I think my kids are a bit too young since they are not in school full time yet BUT those of you that have what sort of equipment do you use? Do many of you use a steam press? If I were to go down this route do you think a steam press is of more value than a higher spec iron??I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife
