Barclaycard text message

I have received the following text message:

We're sending you a new Barclaycard (or cards). If it wasn't you who asked for this, call us on 0800 029 4269 (call charges may apply)

I didn't even request a new card. Also the text message was received at an unusual time. Contacted Barclays on social media as I wasn't sure if it's genuine.
They say that the text (including the 0800) number is genuine, and it was odd I received the text despite not requesting a new card.

I'be logged on and everything is normal and nothing has changed. No unusual transactions.

Anyone received the above text message?

It's reported via a Google search to be a scam message... DO NOT CALL IT or hand over any security info to them!

Why not call Barclaycard via the number printed on the back of your card to confirm that? (0800 151 0900 if you don't have a magnifying glass handy).

or use one of these numbers.

You have still got your BC in your possession - it hasn't been reported as lost by a 3rd party? (you've probably already checked this but had to ask)

Thanks for letting me know it's a scam.
  • I’ve received the exact same text when I’ve requested a new Barclaycard. Why not be safe? Call them on the number on the back of your card and check if a new on was sent out and if yes, why it was. Maybe your card number was found to be breached and they’re sending a replacement. Or maybe someone changed your address and requested a card (which is fraud). Call and ask

My wife just received the same text from the same number. It claimed that card ending 3004 is being replaced. Barclaycard told me there was no change to our card numbers and that this card had actually been blocked by their fraud team. Definitely suggests a scam, but no idea how it's supposed to work!

    It definitely doesn't.

It suggests you're getting a replacement card, as the old one has been shut down.

Sounds as dodgy as this post
  • Are they replacing cards for the two-factor authentication purposes? We've just had our company issued Barlclaycards replaced so that they can use the authenticator device that they provided, apparently the old cards didn't work with it.
