What happens if you want to quit uni 3 weeks in?

Flake , have you talked to anyone yet?
I have a neice who quit after a few weeks and went on to a completely different path. Try and share your thoughts with your parents, see if they support you whatever. I have 2 sons away studying and tell myself that I'll support them in their decisions if it doesn't work out for them. No shame, no grief, no baggage is what I say. good luck.0 -
i'd say work out exactly why you want to quit first... is it not having much money, the course, the place, the other students etc etc..... then see if the problem is temporary (eg the first few weeks can be dull as they bring everyone up to the same starting level) or permanent (eg you can't stand the city/campus). deciding something isn't for you can be a very positive thing but equally quitting before you've given something a chance isn't a good plan.
hope you make the right decision for you!:happyhear0 -
My son has been at UNI 4 wks now. He is finding it hard as he has never been away from home before. He is staying in Halls and sharing a flat with three others. As each day passes he starts to sound more positive and is now determined to stick it out. Maybe you should tell your parents how you feel? Last night he rang me so chuffed as he had spent two hours cooking himself a delicious meal and had finally discovered the laundrette. He even took coat hangers to the laundrette, and as soon as his clothes were dry he hung them up, therefore avoiding ironing.
I do feel for you, University is one hell of a culture shock and it takes alot of getting used too!

No, haven't talked to anyone...not very good at doing that lol! But I have decided I will probably stay, for this year anyway. I've got a bad strain of freshers flu at the moment, can't really get out of bed so not much else to do but ponder the situation..
Unless I quit within the next week i am liable for fees, and i am already liable for accomodation. Plus it could affect future funding if i wanted to a degree part-time.
And I think my being ill, also having a broken toe and people standing outside my door late every night  might be influencing me...i've missed out on society meetings and training for this job in security which i really need.
Money is a worry...i already have overdrafts. My student loan hasn't come through yet so i've been using them, plus i remember buying pre-university stuff using them without thinking and now i want to pay them off!
I have gotten into bad habits like buying lunch out, taking the bus instead of walking (broken toe though!)
And i'm doing Earth Sciences at uni, with the aim of going into the oil industry to earn the big ones...but my real dream is to work in development. I want to get rich/start a business so I can really make a difference, rather than going the charity worker route. So i was thinking maybe i'm not on the right track..but the degree still could be useful, i enjoy it and it's always good to have one. Plus i could do some volunteering work at uni for experience. So i will probably just see it through!
Thanks for all your help though guys was very helpful! xx0 -
That's terrible that your student loan hasn't come through. Student Finance are such a joke. They need a firework up their backsides!!!!!!!!!!!! Have you tried contacting them?
Poor you with freshers flu, my DS has just got over it! Not good! Good on you for sticking it out though.
Good luck with all that you do!!!
My DS has probably told me too much about his experiences at Uni so far, but it helps me feel involved in his life!
I'm sure your parents would love to hear what is going on for you, even if it's just snippets!
Us parents miss our Uni children, & expect it not to be an easy ride for them!
Take care. xxKind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. ~ Mother Teresa0 -
if you quit - what will you do?
get a job?
go traveling?
go home?0 -
If i was going to leave i would go home and try to start a business, or work for a company and try and get sponsored to go to uni part-time.
Travelling--i wish! But as said I'm probs staying now.
isualive forgive me for asking but what does DS stand for exactly?
Lol i'm sure your son has found it a great help to be able to offload on you! Sounds like he is getting on fine now and just needed to adjust. I am in regular contact with my mum by text think it helps her too!
Well I walked instead of getting the bus today and contacted a society i joined...my first skydiving experience is now booked!
I'm determined to get a job, pay off my overdrafts and do some volunteer work/join a charity group.
And get my student loan! I phoned them before i came and they said it was all fine, just processing...whatever that means! I've been billed the £3070 tuition fees by the uni and been given a month to pay it, so i assume that hasn't been processed either...unless everyone gets this letter anyway?0 -
DS is Darling Son.
My son too is in the first few weeks of uni and is battling the dreaded freshers flu.
Some smart alec on his corridor has an air-horn which tends to go off at ungodly hours (less now)
Its great your in contact with your Mum.
I have quite a giggle with mine. The other night he was painted with blue food colouring and went on a 7 legged bar crawl. The rest I don't want to know.
Good luck with the skydiving. Rather you than me. _pale_
My son has only just got his loan through. There not very quick.
I'm glad you decided to stick it out. I think most people find it all strange at first.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Hi everyone,
I've just started uni and am considering quitting it...does anyone know the rules financially with student loan etc? I'm getting a maintenance loan and grant (though haven't actually received it yet but should do very soon), same with the student loan for tuition fees. And i'm staying in halls and have already arranged to pay it in 3 installments, first installment soon.
Any help/advice/suggestions would be appreciated!
Sorry to hear your dilemma, there are implications financialy if you leave, you should contact your lea I think up to a month for fees but after that the uni will make you pay the full year, also has implication if you wanted to study next year or year after you would not be intitled to fees paid as a loan, I know my daughter did the same and this year we are having to pay for fees0 -
There are three major financial things to remember with early withdrawal.
1- You may be required to pay back some or all of your loan/grant (contact the SLC to ask about this)
2- It will affect your future funding. If you register for a 3-year course you get 3+1 years of funding *minus* any previous study. Once you have enrolled, even if you withdraw after a couple of weeks this counts as a year's worth of previous study. SO you will have basically used up your 'spare' year of funding and if you don't finish a future course within the normal time-frame (usually 3 years) you wont get an extra 'spare' year.
3. If you are not in attendance on your course on 1st December your fees loan will not be paid to the Uni. This could mean that you end up owing fees directly to the Uni without having a loan to pay for them. Some Unis have a rule that if you withdraw before Dec 1st no fees are owed. Others don't e.g. Where I work you can withdraw before the end of week 4 (19th Oct) without owing fees BUT if you withdraw between 19th Oct and 1st Dec you owe 1 semester's fees (£1535) directly to the Uni without a fees loan to pay for them.
Hope this info helps someone0
