What happens if you want to quit uni 3 weeks in?

I would speak to your Student Union Counselling/Welfare service - they give all sorts of advice. I wouldn't quit after 3 weeks either because you haven't given yourself enough time to settle in. From my experience of Universities (I have just finished working at one after being there 12 years) is that the first 3 weeks are spent partying and joining various clubs etc. Students are still finding their feet in a strange world - so give it longer, who knows that by Christmas you'll be feeling a whole lot better. It is kinda strange not having the same rules as at school where it is so regimented, folks do go a tad mad too as very often I would see students sporting all sorts of strange coloured hair and clothes until they realised that no-one was taking a blind bit of notice and so they revert back to normal.

Have you also considered talking to your tutor? If I were you, I'd stick it for 6 months and then see if I could transfer to another course if the current one is so bad and you feel that you have made a mistake in your choice. Either way, good luck with whatever you decide.

At the Uni I attend, the policy is: if you quit before December 1st, no tutition fees are owed. Then after that they have a time schedule. I think if you leave after December 1st, you then start owing a % of the fees.

that's amazing! yeh i read your thread, gave me the courage to post this one! But sounds like you are happy at uni and just need to gently persuade the tutors to let you change course...it's mad to try and stop you, loads of students do it.

I quite like my course. I'm just not sure full-time uni life is for me. If i carried on, i wouldn't be ultra-struggling with money, but i would be building up a big debt obviously.

But then it could just be adapting to student life like all of you say and i need time to think..not to mention working up the courage to tell my parents:rotfl: ! I guess the dilemna is, the longer i leave it, the more i can gauge what i really want, but also the more debt i could potentially run up!
  • Hmm Flake, I'm getting more unhappy with Uni. Not getting into it tho', this is your thread and you don't wanna be influenced by my experience.

If you like the course and all that's wrong is your enviroment, do give it more time. You may just be finding it hard to adjust to a schedule your not used to.

Find out how long you have before the Uni starts charging tuition fees and speak to someone there about how you are feeling. If you get it off your chest you might feel better and they can then offer on-site advice and support.

Good Luck & hope you make the right choice. :)

Flake, how are you paying your tuition fees? Is your LEA paying them?

Well then you don't have to worry about that, as it's covered.

As far as a student loan goes, i wouldn't worry about it, as no matter how large it gets it's not an enforceable debt (as in, it can't just be demanded back at any time like a 'real' debt can). The main thing to watch is that you don't start buying too much stuff on credit cards.

As has been said earlier, perhaps you should stick it out for at least a few more weeks.
You should be able to get out of having to pay your accommodation costs for the whole year (but you should go and look into this).
There is of course a 'good' and 'bad' way of doing this, depending on how it was paid (if it has already been paid for in advance).

If you did decided to leave, then you may still get all your student loan. You could just stick it in a savings account (or something similar) and just earn some interest on it, then pay it back in full. meaning you might have a little extra left over to go for a drink or 2.

Ok since devil.. said it was university-dependent i have checked out the (mass of) paperwork given to me and...

"Students are entitled to a full refund if a claim is made within the first 4 weeks of the start of the programme. Thereafter, any claim for a refund will be based on the number of weeks in attendance (this includes all categories of students and sponsors including all undergraduate students who have applied for an SLC fee loan)."

Does this mean after the 4 weeks, i just pay for the number of weeks i attend, or might there be a category system eg: 4-30 weeks, £x.xx; 30-50 weeks, £x.xx etc??

I am hesitant to ask the uni as I am afraid of tutors raining down on me and pressurising me biasedly.
  • Try speaking to Student Union. They ain't gonna be biased I wouldn't have thought.

Don't fear the Uni tho' either. :)
  • Ok one thing to be very wary of is that the LEA are only able to offer funding for 4 yrs at a time. I started social policy in sept 05 and reapplied for social work to start sept 06. Summer 06 i was told i have to provide a 'good enough' reason for leaving the 1st course and get full funding for this 1. The 4 years funding covers a standard 3 yr degree + 1 yr if you need to redo a year. I dont know if my LEA which just more thorough with needing a reason or if thats standard practice, so think very carefully about your reasons for leaving if you decide to leave and start over. And i was only at the 1st degree for 6 weeks but they still saw that has 1 year of funding so i have to pass every year or face funding my final year myself!
