I hope I am not straying off topic too much but....

OK I've just been told that I have been given £45 for a DAB radio for my Birthday. The thing is I want one with an alarm clock as it is going to replace my dodgy analogue radio alarm. Extra functions such as downloading the correct time, being able to use the radio as a usable alarm clock (ie can you see the fascia at night etc), sound quality and reliability are important. So I would be willing to supplement my £45 with an extra £20-£30 of my own money to get a DAB radio I am going to be happy with for years to come.

Can anyone give me any advice?

The Pure Bug is out of your price range - but may be worth keeping a look out to see if it is on offer anywhere. I saw one at £99.99 at my local Euronics TV shop on Saturday which is a better price than I have seen on the internet. It's good but not sure I would pay £100+ for it. Picked mine up for £75 and have had no problems with it.

    Thanks to everyone for the advice. Think I will stay clear of the Sharp. How about this from Tesco;

Bit more expensive but I think you can get 10% Tesco extra at the moment. If not there always seems to be Tesco codes around. And it is a Pure which I have heard good reports about. Anyone know about this specific model and the alarm clock functionality.

    Thanks in advance

I got one of the £32+VAT+Delivery pocket DABS from Scan when they had it on offer, I'm happy with the unit but it does not pick up all the multiplexes (channel groups) unless the ariel is extended, and then the signal is sometimes weak.

Network 11 works fine with no anttena, I thought this was because I live near the transmitter, but I got the same effect when using it closer to central London, I live in Chiswick.

I think the antenna issues (poor singal gain) might the reason the older generation of recivers are being knocked out cheaply.

Good to see the cheap units from Asda (Acoustic Solutions) are worth getting now I need to get some more Joey vouchers from Sainsbury to get £6 off my DAB Radio from Asda.. Worth a go ;)

The thing I would watch out for is whether you can see the clock in the dark. Some Pure radios you can touch the handle and it lights up, the Pure Bug can always be lit if you want... but on this model I don't know

There's some more details of the Sainsbury's Red plus a posting about the Pure DX20 at the end

This arrived yesterday (didn't realise you had to call the company to arrange delivery, I just assumed they would send it). The radio itself looks and sounds lovely, but I do agree that the alarm is pretty naff. I live in Cardiff and situated in the exact same position as my old analogue radio it picked up loads of stations crystal clear. Possibly because I'm in a large city, I don't know though. It didn't have any cosmetic damage, so the fact that it's classed as "refurbished" wasn't obvious. Many thanks to the original poster for spotting this.

Took mine back to Richer Sounds today for a refund. Totally depressing after getting such a bargain, but a bargain DAB radio that won't receive any DAB stations is an overpriced FM radio :(

Friend of mine with a Pure Bug is gonna bring it round to see if it picks up the DAB signal any better. If it does I think I'll look for a bargain on the Pure Elan..

I'd never used my Pure Bug as an alarm clock until this week and was quite impressed. Maybe other digital radios do the same but certainly not my old clock radio :

    * Displays the time in large characters and the alarm time in small characters on screen at the same time (can set 2 alarms)
    * If you wake up before the alarm and put the radio on low as background, when the alarm goes off and the alarm is set to the radio program you are listening to the volume increases dramatically
    * You can choose any radio program as the alarm so can go to sleep with one radio program on (or MP3 playing) and wake up to another.
    * Can choose to have the alarm on every day or just week days (so don't have to remember to switch it off at weekends).
