    rent 800pcm
    c tax 130 pm
cc around 10 quid a week
    csa 120 pm
    train 100 pm
gas a heating around 80 pm
    tv 20 pm

    not much left

You are missing a lot here. Such as water, food etc. Use the form I suggested and go from there. It will at least give you an idea of what you can afford and where you can save. £80 pm for gas is very high. What about electric? Do you have a single person CT rate? etc

    thanks.

im surviving on around 40 quid a week and occasionally use my cc. this is the first time ive rented alone and ive basically made a hash of it

I will give you sympathy, you have done it realised early you can’t manage and put your hands up to it.

I am a LL and I would welcome the conversation and a way out for both of you. I appreciate not all are the same but I think you have done well to admit you can’t manage before you are in over your head.

    What's CC and CSA?

I know I will get shot for this, but start by scrapping things you don't NEED like "tv £20 per month" Have you heard of Freeview or Freesat?

So how much a month are you short? If it's not much, speak to your landlord. Speaking as a LL I would probably rather keep a tenant at say £750 per month than have a void period and the cost of finding a new tenant.

Yes, and £20 p.m for TV very low? What about phone use, does OP use pay as you go or monthly payments?

He probably doesn`t need to pay 800 p.m rent, it will depend whereabouts he/she is in the country I suppose...

But 20% tax, 12% in and possibly 9% student loan would be a difference of £120ish.
1519 and 1689 are the net take home pay figures after tax and NI.

on a salary of 22k there won't be student loan since that starts at 22k

I agree however that with rent around 53% of take home, it does suggest OP's main problems lie in inability to budget and manage his spending, not size of rent.

CC is I assume credit card give OP says his food bill is £40 or £10 per week
CSA = child support agency, so therein lies a hint at OP's real problems, he has a kid he is supporting

Well he/she signed a contract that they would. Once the contract is up, they can leave and shop around for rent as they please, but in the meantime they should do their best to meet their obligations if they possibly can.

Pardon? You think paying half of your take home wages in rent is ok or somehow normal?

I have been there and done that, in my case where the mortgage was more than half my take home pay.

When you are on a low income (I never thought I would call £22K a low income, that's more than I earn now) you have to learn what to spend your money on, and more importantly what NOT to spend your money on.

Credit cards are evil things in this situation. Do NOT use them to spread payments. Take a look at the interest they charge. They are wonderful things just for ease of purchase and pay off the lot each month. We probably spend £2K per month on them, but never pay a penny in interest. The very last thing you want to be paying when you are short of money, is interest.

If you can't afford to buy it, then DON'T Make do with what you have.

I honestly think people today have lost the ability to "make do" when things get tight.

If you do throw in the towel, where are you going to live?

Old loans are 17k ish for starting paying back student loans. Even so £130 a month csa isn't much compared to what he earns
