  • My automatic savings go straight into investment (mostly S&S ISA, plus smaller amount to a LISA intended to help pay off mortgage when I'm 60). That's about a third of my targetted savings - the rest are building up an emergency fund and a car fund for the end of my PCP deal at the moment. I may revisit when these are sufficient and boost the investment or I may try to pay down the mortgage a bit first.

My savings are mostly going into regular savers and a LISA as we are saving towards a deposit. Not against saving in S&S ISA but everything is going towards the house purchase first. So far this month I have put away £398.24 which is all planned savings and interest for this month, I might have a little left to increase it.

I'm also very interested to know if any other people here are using a Stocks & Shares ISA as the vehicle for their 2018 savings target - or whether most people are using simple old-fashioned savings accounts / Cash ISAs. I ask because I've been investing in shares for around 18 years and people always seem to be amazed when I tell them this - like I'm some kind of financial expert. It would be nice to see if there are others like myself who prefer to invest than save.

    (Love the handle 'Martinslovechild'!!)

I've been entirely in cash ISAs until this year, but in April am planning to open a Vanguard S&S ISA. Planning to fund that up to a maximum of 20% of my overall stash, plus a Prudential AVC (different approach to tax-free investment) for another 20%.

18 years of investing is impressive - would be interesting to hear more about the returns you've seen over that period?

Thanks. I'm unable to give you an exact percentage figure as I originally formed & chaired an Investment Club. During that time, I deposited relatively small sums. During the 5 years of the club's existence, I made around 120% profit. Since I folded the club, I've been managing investments in my own S&S ISA, but I also look after other family members' ISAs too.

    Returns vary - but since 2010, I've made +18.5% (2010), -12% (2011), +7.3% (2012), -3% (2013), -6.5% (2014), +24.9% (2015), +12.1% (2016), +9.3% (2017) and +4.1% in the current year since 1st Jan (as I'm writing, the last fortnight). The average gain is around 7.5%/annum. My target is for around 7%/annum growth.

My ISA is basically my "financial playground" where I get to take more risks than with my pension. Ironically, although my pension is invested more "conservatively", it has actually provided greater returns than my ISA in several cases - all good, since I'll eventually be drawing down from both. As an example, my pension returned 24% last year.
    Mortgage Feb 2001 - £129,000
    Mortgage July 2007 - £0
Original Mortgage Termination Date - Nov 2018
    Mortgage Interest saved - £63790.60
    ISA Profit since Jan 1st 2015 - 98.2% (updated 1 Dec 2020)

Thanks for sharing these figures, significant ups & downs then! Guess I need to steel myself to stick in there for the long term... must have been tough at end of 2014 looking back at 3-out-of-4 years in the negative. Some people might have bailed at that point, but then missed out on the following by 2+ years of strong growth. I've heard the 7% quoted before, so it's good to see it illustrated over 8 years of real-life investing.

The last spend I had was on Boxing Day which was 17 days Up to the 13th. I shouldn’t have said this month but since Boxing Day.

Hope you manage to save a similar amount or more.

£150 a month goes into my S&S ISA and the rest of my savings are in multiple regular savers, which mature after each year but I have set it up so I have at least two maturing each month till January 2019. Pay off my credit cards and then put into S&S ISA and repeat.

  • Is it too late to put my name down please?

My target for the year will be £14k.

We’re saving for a house and plan to move next year. Currently have £4k debt to shift, so will be saving £10k overall hopefully!
  • Hi guys!
I would really like to join you this year. The problem is my saving goal is a bit different- I need to save up £10k by the 1st of July for my house deposit. I will continue being frugal after that date but not sure how much I will be able to save up yet.
You are such an inspiring bunch and I will need a lot of encourage so I hope that will be ok to join with 10k aim?

So far in 2018 I saved 444.65 and as well got back £290 that I lend to someone. So far I have £734.65/£10000
My overall house deposit stands at £4244.65/£13500.

    Welcome to the crazy house...

That sounds like a great plan, after all whatever you save by July is more then you have today...

    Let the challenge begin...

    Welcome again
