I'd be wary of closing the lid in case of mould on the seals and in the freezer itself, and if you prop the lid open a little you could damage the seal. Best to leave it wide open if you can I think
maybe a compromise if you close it but open it regularly for a few hours to air through?... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

crockpot - you could leave the lid down but just propped open slightly with a tea towel or two so that air can get in and circulate to prevent mould.

boredofbeingathome - what scones did you make the cheese and ham ones? these are next on my list
I made the plain ones, just cheese didn't have any ham and i melted cheese on top as well mmmm. I also make sultana ones and tonight i made loveheart shaped ones as its valentines day.
Someone posted about using aldi flour, i use it all the time very comparable to others and there was a great recipe for lemon drizzle cake on the back-i made that tonight as well- nearly all gone.
Aldi also do a wholemeal organic dove flour. As dd2 is a diabetic i was going to use this for scones etc has anyone used it before? i have used for bread, and Aldi have ready made mixes for bread. i have made wholemeal- nice but falls after initial rising, sunflower and mulitgrain- very nice. Just going to try the ciabatti.
I also had a thought about low fat sponge cake, i think rosemary connely hip and thigh diet books have a recipe in. Will have a look and see if i can find it.Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

Found this recipe, sorry don't know who posted it originally
butterless sponge....separate your eggs, beat yolks and sugar until creamy and holding a shape when you lift beaters, sift in s.r. flour and then stiff whisk whites and fold in with a cutting movement, using a metal spoon, cook as normal...should rise well but if you are nervous about this sift in half a teaspoon baking powder with flour0 -
Hi everyone,
Can I join you,I've read as much as I can for now, have made Twink's hobnobs (very yummy) and am going to try the braids, savoury muffins and banana muffins. This is a wonderful thread and I'll try to contribute as much as I can.
I am a mum of 4 munchkins, 13 down to 5, all of whom stay at home with me as we home educate them.My house is a tip and I never find the time to sort it out, but I do cook from scratch and have been inspired by you all. The kids love to cook and we do cook alot together as it is so educational apart from fun!!
I'm hoping to feel inspired enough to bring our food budget down ( we have a very low income) and still manage to keep their tummies from growling at me with hunger!!
Anyway, just wanted to say hi. Have to get back to tackling algebra with oldest son!! Eeeek0 -
Hi Marrbett, welcome!
I really admire you for homeschooling, a thing unheard of in my day. You're teaching them good habits with the cooking too! The kids of OS parents are very fortunate - so many youngsters today leave home and have no idea of how to feed and look after themselves.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

yes it is hard home schooling well done. I have gleaned lots of tips from this thread and just feel like i am scratching the surface. With regards to house being a tip why not give the children an internet research project? they can come on the old style cleaning thread and test drive the tips and rate them for effectiveness, practical, fun and sneaky as well. You could reward them with some nice food, from recipes on here though. On a less flippant note-It just adds to the educational side, learning how to produce a cost effectiveness chart, and rating value of product vs effectivenes. Even younger ones may have opinion on how easy cleaning windows is with x product as opposed to y product. Be wary though of chemicals and everyone should be able to contribute, which may take pressure off you a little.Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

At least I know mine will be able to cook when they leave home. The morris dance group kids take it in turns to bake for snack at their weekly practice. My DS's turn this week. His sis helped him to make fairy cakes. THey were lovely. She's just made some more now to take away tomorrow. Will take a pic if I get a chance. She's visiting orchestra buddies in Cambridge, where one is at Uni. She wanted to take something with her. THey can cook 'proper' stuff as well of course, as well as cake!
They are 17 and 14. I'm very proud of them of course! She was telling me today how rude her b/f is to his mum (mother is a bit of a health food enthusiast I believe, there's lots the boys aren't allowed. I agree with that though. She is OS as far as cooking is concerned though. B/f likes my cooking too. I gave him a jar of marmalade to take back last time, he hid it, but apparently someone else found it LOL! She gave dd some HM elderflower cordial which is gorgeous!). DS told me how rude his buddy is to his mum (who is my friend). Both agreed they would never get away with it at home. I felt quite pleased. I regard it as a compliment to the way I've brought them up really. I guess they realise there just isn't any point in trying it on.
Rambling again. Waiting to put Tortilla Beany bake in the oven (new recipe), will clear up now, then don't have to do it later."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"
