Talking of Jaffa Cakes - anyone got a recipe.. making my mouth water...
Thanks in advance0 -
The topping I used was one jar cheapy marmalade, I found it was better as no bits. A good slosh of orange juice, boil until dissolved. I then added cornflour, mixed with small amount of orange juice., a tiny bit at a time until it had thickened. Leave to cool and voila....HM jaffa topping. Loads left over which I put in freezer.0

great for putting off the trip to the shops for another day. I found it on Sammy Kayes £100 a month thread.
My DD has been reading a book with her dad that is a few years old, and in the book the children had bubble and squeak, cue requests for B&S. Soooo, I dug out the stalk of brussels that had been lurking in the fridge for 2 weeks (came in the veg box) pulled off the yellow leaves, cooked up up, mixed with mash and fried - lo & behold children eating brussels, and one happy DD, never ever thought i would see the day when i would eat a brussel, let alone the kids.0 -

Thanks for such an informative post Rosieben,
Does the white vinegar really work? I am a MOO! for fabric conditioner my fav is the Comfort Creme (and probably one of the most expensive f.c.'s too) do the clothes smell nice or is there really no vinegar smell? How much do you use per wash?
I always used to buy the value powder then my drain got blocked up with the powder (again I am a MOO for powder) so switched to own brand liquid instead. Strangely enough I was given a massive (60 Washes) box of Aerial and I hate the smell now - odd isn't it
I do cut back on the quantities I use esp shampoo etc but OH is a !!!!!! for smellies and deodorants...
I did stock up on stardrops but I found it too soapy - maybe I should try making a solution up instead - again I am a MOO for cleaning products - I was too ashamed  to post a pic of my cleaning supplies cupboards (yes there is more than 1)
I've beaten you on the bleach front - I now only use it for the toilets, I also use the value denture tablets which leave the toilet sparkling
a weak solution of bicarb and water to clean inside the fridge and mw - will try this one - thanks!
Thanks for link to thread - will check it out
Penny - thanks for such lovely comments re my kitchen, the cupboards, floor etc we put in four years ago, but when we had our bathroom installed we had a massive leak and the insurance company offered to do the work however, they would only do like with like so we took the cash and bought worktops (that would have been out of our price range) and had the kitchen replastered and tiled.
I must admit I am a bit of cleaning freak (ask any member of my family they all call me Anthea!!) I try to keep my kitchen clean all the time - cos it's at front of our house and you have to pass thru it to access any other room0 -

I wasn't that keen on the smell (fragrance?) of Ariel powder until I joined OS thread. I never used the full amount anyway, but reduced some more and bunged some washing soda in with it. The one I really dislike is Persil colour."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Thanks everyone for grt tips again. Am having trouble posting at moment, it wont let me quote or write longer posts so will update later as have lost two posts now and a pic of crumpets.Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:0 -
Hi Donna
Does the white vinegar really work? I am a MOO! for fabric conditioner my fav is the Comfort Creme (and probably one of the most expensive f.c.'s too) do the clothes smell nice or is there really no vinegar smell? How much do you use per wash?
Yes the white vinegar works, and no smell. I believe its kinder to fabrics as it cleans out the soap more thoroughly and doesn’t leave a residue.
My dd uses a lot of conditioner, like you she loves the smell but I find her towels sticky to the touch, I don’t like that build up of chemicals on fabric.
I do cut back on the quantities I use esp shampoo etc but OH is a !!!!!! for smellies and deodorants...
I actually water down my shampoo, its really thick anyway and takes ages to get out of the bottle! So I half and half it with water and it works great! Might it work with something that OH uses? You could do it gradually - start off doing 25% water? leave time for it to settle before he gets to it as it will bubble up a bit!
I did stock up on stardrops but I found it too soapy - maybe I should try making a solution up instead - again I am a MOO for cleaning products - I was too ashamed to post a pic of my cleaning supplies cupboards (yes there is more than 1)
I love stardrops but it is a bit foamy! (I remember reading an old post from someone who’d used it in their washing machine and there was rather a lot of lather!) that’s why I prefer a solution. For stubborn dirt I would use a little neat on a cloth.
I've been the same with cleaning products – I had a big double cupboard full, and all the laundry stuff in yet another cupboard! I haven’t bought any expensive chemical cleaners since I started getting into OS and I’ve still loads to use up.
I've beaten you on the bleach front - I now only use it for the toilets, I also use the value denture tablets which leave the toilet sparkling
This is my shamethat I still buy bleach but I’m weaning myself off it gradually! Never thought of denture tablets but I don’t have use for them, maybe I can beg a couple from my aunt!

Bicarb is good as it gets rid of smells. Normally I just use a damp rag for the mw but if I’ve had anything smelly in there, fish or curry, I use a little bicarb solution.
As I said earlier, its a case of finding what works for you, and the good thing is that OS cleaning supplies don't cost a great deal so if you don't like them its not a huge loss but you can generally find a use for things - I'm using up some shampoo that I dont like on my hair but works great as a liquid wash for hand washing.
HTH... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Not sure if this is right place for this-feel free to move!
I have emptied and defrosted my chest freezer, and am goibng to try and do without it for a while, or at least until I have eaten up the food in fridge freezer-shop from home!
How is it best to store it?
Have dried it out, will it go `funny` if i just close lid and leave it unplugged? would like to be able to close it as it is in the corner of the kitchen.
Thanks0 -
