Those chef things looked like a really good deal Maisie
Sadly I haven't got an Aldi anywhere near me...though its probably a good thing or I know I'd be trying to make another laarge space in the cupboard
PurpleIvy meant to say thanks those recipes look rather lush!! I love school dinner recipes I was brought up on them as my mum was a dinnerlady.Back in those 'propercooking' days !!
Yategirl the flan recipe is a cheat one really,:o bought flan case, syrup from fruit added to quickjel and desired fruit layered onto case with jel poured over.I'll bet it would be easy to make up with a homemade sponge and jelly though really0 -
Purpleivy, thanks so much for the recipes and for doing the maths for us!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Have been looking for the recipe for rainbow cake, but can't find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Have made loads of iced buns from your recipe Dee- everyone thinks they're brill!!(even my fussy 10 DD!)0 -
Applemella hi the recipie for rainbow cakes is post no 107 (on page 6). Sorry would do a link but not sure how.
D&DD yep the mixer is a bit of an indulgence but I got money for Xmas and rather than fritter it away or spend it on clothes - of which I have enough to open a shop lol - I thought I would buy the mixer as i have wanted one for years but couldn't justify the cost. Still in its box though as I can't decide where I am going to keep it.
I came on to MSE to find out about a trampoline fixing kit as its blowing a hoolie up here in scotland and the little ones trampoline has taken a tumble across the garden. Have now righted it and tied it up against the fence (probably take the fence with it next time:eek: ) but I didnt want it going through my windows or worse into a neighbours garden and damaging their stuff.
Just finish my cocoa as it was freezing out there in my jammies, raincoat and wellies (very fetching it was bit like the good life when they had the storms and it was harvest time but I didnt quite have Margo's outfit and style:p ) and then I will try and get some sleep. Havent had any yet as too worried about the wind but now the trampoline is secure I should be okay.
hope everyone else is okay in this weather0 -

Dee I have to laugh cos the recipe for flan cases is one of the few recipes I remember from School Cookery Classes. For anyone who wants to make their own its as follows
Sponge Flan Case
2oz Sugar (I use granulated)
2 eggs
2oz Plain flour
Beat the sugar and the eggs in a bowl until the mixture is thick enough to leave a trail on top when the beaters are removed. Then fold in the flour.Pour into a greased flan tin and bake for approx ten minutes oven at Gas Mark 5.Dont ask me for electric oven temps as me and electric ovens dont get on so I dont use them
Its a howling gale in Burnley this morning so I definitely think I will nominate today to camp out in the kitchen and do my baking
Oh after 3 so so attempts I finally managed to adapt the braid recipe last night into one that my hubby and kids would eat.I tried using raw apple and cinnamon etc but my lot just werent keen so I used some leftover cooked apple and sprinkled some sultanas over it.Well it disappeared before it was cool so I can take that as they enjoyed it I think

Please let me know if you try these recipes, if they don't seem to work I'll go back to the drawing board...... they were scaled down remember. I found out that the recipe described as American COngealed Salad was in fact a 'grapefruit, mint and ham ring'.
Ahem....... I've brought my children up not to make comments like 'disgusting' or 'yuk' about food, so let's just say..... 'I don't think that would be to my taste!'. THis is in fact a euphemism for 'Yuck'!Right... sat down a few minutes ago to do the recipe scale down for the birdseed..... lunch was leftover liver& onion from night before last and small amount of goat cheese and leek lasagne from last night. I managed to do these without shopping, so pleased.
I think the amounts for the birdseed are quite flexible, I would use normal porridge oats rather than the jumbo, I think they would be a bit chunky and chewy. You could incorporate your child's favourite cereal and I guess increase the cereal amount. You need to remember that it's at least 25 years since I made this, but I suspect it's how we used up odds and ends that we couldn't use in the kitchens in any other way. No turkey twizzlers there, we were well OS!
Amounts will depend on appetite of course, the original recipe said for 100, so more or less divided by 20. I guess it's going to be in the region of 4-6 portions.
Birdseed
180g porridge oats
80g demerara sugar
45g marg (but I would use butter I think!)
25g breakfast cereal, book suggests rice crispies, cornflakes or puffed wheat.
1 tsp cocoa powder
Melt marg and add to dry ingredients. Mix till fat is absorbed. Spread on baking tray and bake for 10 mins in a medium oven. Serve with thinnish custard.
Sand in the Red Sea
225g flour
90g marg
100g sugar
Rub fat into flour until it resembles crumble. Add sugar and mix. Bake on flat tin on medium heat for 10 minutes or until golden.
Jam sauce -
160g cheap jam or HM if you have lots! (approx 1/3 jar)
15g cornflour
approx 300ml water... to give correct consistency.
Mix cornflour with most of water and bring to the boil with the jam. Adjust consistency with remaining water if necessary.
Now to think of a meal for this evening with whatever we have in, It's far to nasty to go out just for shopping!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

The iced buns were just an adaptation from the dough used in the apple braid recipe. Some of us decided that if you halved the dough and made a smaller braid you could also make some iced jam buns as well.So if you use the dough from the braid and make it into rolls and then fill them with jam of your choice and slap a bit of icing on top Bobs your uncle as they say.HTH
