  • HI All

glad to report - THE RAINS STOPPED....................for now.

Ive missed loads on this thread and am tempted not to reread bits as i know ill end up with more gadgets to go on my christmas list that i cant afford!!! Jsut found out today too that mybenefits arent going to come in until 24th DEcember!!! but bf is paid on the 21st and we are plannign to go to Cardiff for the day and gettign any gifts to get and a food shop so it will all get done - got all the treaty thigns bar home makable stuff but need the chicken and veg and other householdy bits.

Am still dying of my bug but gettign through it hopefulyl it will start to ease off - ive had it a week now and still feel as bad as i did the day i got it, same with little one and bf.

christmas wise like i said i have snack things, pringles (bogof in wilko) tin of quality street (nan brought me) box of choccie selection biscuits (nan brought) butter biscuits (again nan brought) christmas cake (nan brought) box of choccies (the free one in a bogof offer with mil) trifle (again free bogof one) so i only have to go and buy a bag of mini cocktail sausages and sausage rolls in iceland for about £2 (for both) and then im done. Dog is stocked on food too with tins, complete food, mixer adn chubb sausages so hes done and sporting a very fetching cashmere looking jumper.

Ben is doing his concert tomorrow so looking forward to that and daddy has booked the day off too (will make sure i have pictures of lambchop for you dee!!!)

Have been through fridge and cupboard and am going to use things up again now - brought lots of bits and pieces as nibbles to tide us over - bf likes to nibble and pick instead of eat a meal so am going to look at using things up now before the big day arrives. have bread flour and yeast etc so might make sticky buns tomorrow, or some cakes or some shortbread as im in a nibbling mood too and facny some nice comfort food - can always say im perfectign recipes before the big day - hopign to do all my baking on the saturday sunday 22nd and 23rd of december and hopefully there will be enough left to nibble tc seeign as im workign the rest of hte 23rd (3 - 10pm) and then the 24th will be a last minute panic day if ive forgotten anythign

saw some raspberries going cheap(ish) and thought i would buy some to make microwaveable raspberry jam.. do you happen to have a handydandy recipe to go with the microwaveable marmalade and lemoncurd? oh, and will the same recipe work with strawberries? (saw some strawberries too. heh.) thought i'd make a jar or two to make up for the disaster that was the strawberry preserve.

[also gonna do Nigella's Spiced Peaches and possibly her chocolate with pistachio fudge. If i can find some pistachios already shelled that don't cost the earth. I have a feeling these hampers are gonna be so full the boxes might break.. keep thinking of things i can put in them. Thought about making mom some butter. Yeah, i know. but i know she'd absolutely.. well.. go ga-ga over it. home made butter. maybe. maybe not.]

    thanks!

  • Kethry. I make microwave jam with raspberries or strawberries, fresh or frozen.

Soften first in microwave in a large bowl with a cover on. When soft I add to 500g of fruit 500g of sugar and cook in 4 - 4 minute bursts stirring between each burst and adding a knob of butter after 3rd burst. Test for setting point on a cold saucer, if setting is not reached at this stage give another 4 minutes. Pour into sterilised jars and seal.

Yes that's right Keth and reduce the cooking time accordingly. Not a problem because you just do it til it's done.

Hi everyone, things still going well here, I still have way too much in the freezer, we were out for dinner last night and are out again Monday but still trying hard to use up and haven't bought anything. Must go and get something out for tonights dinner, I can't decide what, stew I think as I spotted a pot of that last night, drop in some dumplings, might even have some mash made in there too.

Booked an Asda delivery for the 20th, I was going to get one earlier but figure what I have will last until after then, only because I prefer the service (and substitutions) from them. I must remember to alter it before delivery or I'll just have 30 bottles of orange juice :rotfl:
One day I might be more organised...........

Hi everyone! Made a bit of a discovery today. When I've been making bread it has been collapsing on top. I'm almost out of white bread flour so I used 1 cup white, 1 brown and 1 plain value flour.
It rose really nicely and was lovely!
I made a boob the other night with the chicken pie. It was dreadful. I still have loads left and because it was all veggies (no pastry) I think that I might try to turn it into soup now and resurrect it. It should make a reasonable soup provided it thickens up alright.

I'm starting to get concerned about food prices spiralling. I haven't bought pasta for a while but I know it has shot up in price. As has milk- so I expect cheese will. Bread has. Butter has too. Food is doubling in price.
I think that my generation and younger are going to have a huge shock to the system when they can't afford food. We have had a very cheap time recently and I think it's coming to an end. I for one am worried.
