Yategirl just checked my chilli flakes, they are Fudco Crushed Chilli Flakes 300g they came from Tesco. You can of course get the crushed chillis Kethry mentioned aswell. Sorry to hear about your freezer disaster, I've had that happen once, happened to my parents a couple of times.

Like I said that list is from memory, there will be more, I actually feel better seeing it like that as I panic less, weird. Of course is a list of stuff for the kids seperate as some of that they can't/won't have, I'm wondering why my freezers are so full but then I look at that and it all makes sense.... Anyway I've got some of the chicken out (is another meals worth there when I looked) to make enchilladas for dinner, I have some corn tortillas somewhere, need something with a kick and strong flavours as can hardly taste food with this cold.
One day I might be more organised...........

maybe you should look at your store differently... it is good to have a store especially if/when prices go up and budgets suffer... yeah? so... why not for every meal you take out in a week... you have to put another one in - that way you know you are using the stores up (this is obviously good for rotation and freezer dates etc etc) but you are also keeping them topped up?!!!

Another preserving recipe for you all:

    Sweet Onion Compote

    makes 3-4 jars

125g mixed dried fruit (raisins, apricots, prunes etc)
    250ml orange juice
    450g white onions
1 tblsp olive oil or 25g butter
    1 tblsp brown sugar
225g eating apples, peeled cored and sliced
    4 tblsp balsamic vinegar
    salt and pepper

    1. chop mixed fruit and marinate in orange juice for an hour or so
    2. slice the onions and sweat in oil/butter with the sugar over a gentle heat till translucent and golden brown
    3. add the apples, mixed fruit and vinegar and cook for 25mins until most of the liquid has gone
    4. season and put in warm sterilised jars, cover while still hot. This will keep well in the fridge for about a month.

Recipe came from a booklet from GYO mag and is out of Sarah Raven's Garden Cookbook. Sounds yummy and will be giving it a go soon!

Yategirl that will be a good idea next time, this time I need to empty them a bit so I can fit them all into one as the one in the kitchen needs defrosting, cleaning and moving (I can't budge it as it's too full :o) I know what you mean about the prices and budgets, when we moved I used up quite a bit then (ok I still brought LOADS with me) but that month it helped save enough money to pay for the van hire and the new crockery we wanted. This month I want some Mermaid tins :D

I usually try to keep the freezers full all the time as it's cheaper to run that way so have been plugging gaps with bread, chopped onions, blanched veg etc. Just amending the Asda order as I need some more cornmeal for tortillas, I'm trying to just add it as I notice it rather than ordering what I 'usually' order & end up with more than I need of a lot of things and not enough of others. I've done it more to save having to carry stuff, I will be doing another 'shop' shop nearer Christmas.

:( Oh no I'm out of balsamic vinegar, would loved to have made that recipe, have everything else for it aswell, bah, might have to go to the shop on Monday and get some.

  • Kethry, have just caught up with your post. So sorry about the jam. I cook mine on high and I walk away and leave it but you really do need the largest bowl you can fit into your microwave. Anyway the finished result sounds just as yummy as it should be and I always say mistakes are the way we learn.

Mmmmm homemade jam on homemade bread but o dear my poor hips......,

Hehe, yate girl I was going to try one like that next time.
The recipe I had was for St Stephens day pie from the BBC website. It's nice when made slightly following the recipe. I didn't use the egg for the mash and I halfed the quantities for everything except the meat and only used a small amount of chicken. Delicious!
DH made spag bol tonight really yummy!

see i knew i couldnt resist it!!!! I just spent another £30 in sainsburys to stock up and make use of my "save £3 on £30" voucher!!! :o :rotfl:

Only "needed absolutely cos i have ran out of it completely" - a loaf of bread. :o:o:o

BUT ive stocked up on more storecupboard things like tins etc even though i have about 2/3 of each in anyway.... some basics for the freezer like chicken fillets, sausages etc Teabags and kitchen roll as im running low on them... Cartons of ocean spray cranberry juice as they are on offer and work out cheaper than supermarket own. GOD KNOWS where im gonna put it all!!:rotfl:

Saved even more than i expected too as i managed to grab some reduced bargains - including 2 pint bottles of organic milk for 45p each! :D So grabbed a couple of them for the freezer! ;)

This meant i could treat myself to a pack of choccy biccies! :o And also treated me and OH to a pizza, garlic bread and bottle of pop for thursday night when he is finally off work for one night. Cost £1.79 -Alternative would probably have been a takeaway and would have been £10ish!! So very MSE! hehe

(extra bonus was i paid with my debit card for first time in ages as i still have money in the bank this month and get paid on friday!! Last few months ive been overdrawn by now so was easier and cheaper to put it on my 0% credit card!)

about the spiced peaches: in comparison, they were a doddle. i made 4 tins worth. Looks gorgeous, tastes fabulous.

Kathy - did Nigella say how long they would keep? I love the look of these but think I'd be the only one eating them. Would love to make some for over the next month.

Have just made Twinks Hobnobs with the little addition of chocolate drizzled over the top. They were delicious. No wonder everyone raves about them.

Also made some of Jamie Olivers sausage rolls with dried apricots (WOW!) made with Delia's quick flaky pastry. Now on my list of favourites. :D

Looking for more new things to make in the breadmaker. Any ideas? Would love to make something like the Warbutons seed batch loaf.

I have a seed bread recipe for the breamaker
    10 floz hand hot water
    1 1/2 tbsp sunflower oil
    2 tsp lemon juice
13oz strong white bread flour **
    4 1/2 oz rye flour
    1 1/2 oz milk powder
    1 1/2 tsp salt
    1 tbsp light brown sugar
    1 tsp caraway seeds
    1/2 tsp poppy seeds
    1/2 tsp sesame seeds
    1 tsp easy blend yeast

Add ingredients in the order above and set to basic white bread setting. You can glaze with egg white and water and sprinkle over sunflower seeds if you know when the machine is about to bake.

**The Warburtons one is a brown loaf so flour substitution may be needed
