Savoury rice bulk out with beans, peas, brocc, cauli and possibly a chicken breast (or if you're roasting the chicken for sunday lunch use a bit of the leftover chicken)
Steamed sponge puds with jam in the bottom
Jam/lemon curd tarts
Bakewell tart (pastry, layer of jam then a normal sponge mix on top,top with icing)
Rice pud with raisins is just yum!!
HTH will be back on later if you need recipes for above and will try to think of some more0 -
How about a cowboy casserole - baked beans with a slosh of ketchup, some sweetcorn or peas and some of the hotdogs sliced into it. It's nicer with onion and garlic fried off first - but if you don't have them - how about a stock cube crumbled in for extra flavour. This could be served over pasta or jacket spuds or savoury rice.“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

some good idea and yes D&DD i wouldnt mind some recipes as always willing to try new things. I have a major sweet tooth today so have been nibbling on homemade fudge for the time beign but think i mihgt make up some pancakes and possibly whip up a batch of twinks hobnobs - these have the bonus of filling bf up if he feels the need to nibble, (although he has mini sausage rolls now to), plus ben eats them as a treat, i can take them in packed lunch box for work, it measn i have more to put in the oven so no wasted gas and it will cure my sweet tooth and its thign si wont really miss form the cupboard (ie bit of flour, bit of butter, bit of sugar, porridge oats and golden syrup!)Time to find me again0

UPDATE FOR DAY 7- 1 WEEK !!!!
TOTAL SPENT £6.560 -
I am chuffed to bits with our total grocery shopping this week :j
I've had a few palpitations today as empty packets have started going into the bin (but have noted whats been used for a future top up shop :rotfl: )
I made some rolls this morning as we had FIL up for the day..unfortunately I decided to make a batch of ham and pineapple pizzas too as the ham was almost out of date and half of it (destined for the freezer)was snaffled by said Father in law...
Used up all the grated mozz and red leic too plus a tub of butter, another bag of flour and last of a box of yeast  Finished a bottle of tomato ketchup and a bag of sausages as well..*deep breaths*..
Breakfast today was bagels with bacon, lettuce and philly
Lunch was toasted apple sarnies,scrummy!!
Dinner was KETHRY's sausage casserole with a tatie top and it went down a storm!! Boys loved it and have asked for it again :T Quick and easy to make too
Thriftmonster that jammy braid sounds gorgeous must try that one as I have *just a few* pots of homemade jam stored for the winter
I think I may have to get some more strawberries tomorrow so will check out the local farm shop first they're £2.99 at Sainsburys and about the same at Mr T's can't afford that at the moment..
Thanks again for everyones support I've been doing the bank accounts today and reckon if we can last for a month  like this we'll be back on track, then I only have xmas to get through :rotfl:0 -
Thanks for the recipes link, will look once we move, tomorrow.
Oh dear after taking all that food over I've filled 2x30 litre boxes and a box my microwave came in of food from the cupboards. The fridge stuff will hopefully fit in the 2 huge drawers. Couple of bags for the freezer stocks too
Where I will put it all I don't know!!!! Might have to have some hamster type food storing under my bed
Right, once we're moved in and sorted, oh and the internet connection is on, I have no idea how long it'll take, I'm joining in with the challenge, with an added one of DP wants to loose weight so will be trying to make healthier meals aswell. I've been doing well so far, just a week left on my GC this month and I've spent less than half of it, including those bargains. I will need to do a meat shop at some point but still going to try and reduce grocery spend and stocks before Xmas. One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
okay, Sammy.. few ideas for you..
baked beans can be drained and washed and used as normal beans in just about anything.. they'll still retain some of their tomato colouring, so i wouldn't put them in anything white or anything where the tomato taste wouldn't quite go (i.e. a white sauce or soup). but they'll be fine in a chilli if you've run out of kidney beans for example. you could put the sauce in a chilli too
pasta bakes.. i assume they're these? if so, then you can add things to them to bulk them out and make them taste better. What i do depends on the flavour, but take for example, the broccoli cheese one or cheese leek and ham.. you could heat through and chop some of your hotdogs, and stir through some well drained sweetcorn, some green beans/peas from the freezer, and grate some extra cheese through. If it still needed some extra flavour, add some pepper (most cheeses have salt in so it will rarely need that), maybe some powdered mustard (only 1/4 tsp though!) or some mixed herbs. taste as you go is my motto.
you could do the same sausage casserole as i recommended to D&DD but with the hotdogs easily enough. The other thing you could do: line the base of a casserole dish with slices of hotdog. Get some sauerkraut (which is just salted pickled cabbage), put into a pan, bring to the boil then reduce and simmer for about 10 minutes (there should be enough water from the bottle it came in but if not add a little bit more). once 10 minutes is done, drain and squeeze the water out. top with some basic shepherd's/cottage pie mix (you know, onions, minced beef/lamb, oxo cubes, maybe some mushrooms, some garlic, whatever you like), then top that with mashed potato. This is very popular with my OH's family, who call it - imaginatively - the sauerkraut dish (but in dutch). LOL. anyway, its really nice, very filling, even a smallish casserole dish will feed us for 2 nights. the hotdog goes really nicely with the sauerkraut. You can miss out the sauerkraut if you can't get it, but it is really nice. maybe that one for another time.
you could make a trifle that would do for a pudding for a few days with your custard, jelly and strawberry whip - even better if you mixed in some of the fruit you've got in the fruit bowl.
the whole chicken in the freezer: get that out, roast it, and do a rubber chicken. even if you eat most of it on one meal, you can still get a soup out of it - put the carcass in to make stock, then when you've got stock, you can use some of your veg (potato, cut up small will eventually cook and fall apart and act as a natural thickener, also add some cut up small broccoli and cauliflower) to make a chicken veg soup for another night.
the apples and pears: cut one of each into chunks, add some dried fruit if you have it, and nuke for a few minutes till it all goes slushy. I would also add some powdered cinnamon or mixed spice if you have it.. you can then use this as the basis for many puddings, or on top of porridge in the morning.
few thoughts there for you.. !! good luck!

Thanks Kethry!!!! Your a star. Am going to get the whole chicken out today. Also does anyoen know if the chicken breasts will be ok to eat?? I put them in there a while ago and if i did the 3 month rule (use within 3 months) that was writen on the pack i should of used them in about july i think. Will these be ok?? like i said I havent defrosted them ro the freezer has never defrosted/been switched off at any time so would you eat them?? I hate wasting stuff. Was thinking i could get them out this morning and use them (well 1 or 2) to make a pie with tomorrow. Actualyl how do you make a pie? what else could i put with it?? I mena i still have about £2 to my name so should i pick up some say mushrooms and an onion? and im on the last of my milk now - defrosting the other one as i speak.
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................forgot to add...................................................................................................................................................................................................................... I will take the whole chicken out tonight so it will be defrosted by tomorrow lunchtime, cook it up for a roast tomorrow. then rubber chicken it for a few meals. I tend to eat breast meat, DS doesnt like it much, BF likes leg meat, so Im thinking stripping the carcass as best i can once done, taking meat for the roast, using some other bits in a curry for bf with some of the rice, some in sandwiches, the carcass for soup, and maybe if i have enough some of the darker meat could go in a pie so wouldnt have to use the chicken breasts after all..................................................................................................................................................................................................................Im loving this thread. Think I might do a monthly shop at the end of the month and see how much i can savea s the freezer is bare, the fridge will be after using the veg and I dont fancy living on beans etc!!Time to find me again0 -

you're welcome sweetie.. to answer your questions.. re: the chicken breasts, I don't know about "safe".. i think they are but someone would probably tell me I'm wrong.. but i'd eat them, as long as they weren't defrosted (and from what you've said it hasn't), but what you may find is that they're rather dry and stringy. For this reason i would use them within something wet - like a casserole or a pie, or a curry maybe, rather than roasting them dry, if you know what i mean, to help reduce the "dryness".sammy_kaye18 wrote: »Actualyl how do you make a pie? what else could i put with it?? yep some mushrooms and onion would go nicely. To make the base part of a chicken pie, i would gently saute a little onion, add the chicken and fry those quickly, just to seal off the outside (where its raw chicken). Add the mushrooms and fry those too. then add a little bit of plain flour and push around quickly, to soak up the juices (it will have a tendency to stick so make sure you do it quickly). Also have a jug/mug of water ready.. when its soaked up all the juices, give it a little bit of time to cook out, then pour in a little water and stir furiously. the flour will absorb the water, when its absorbed it all and it looks dry again, stir in a little more water, and stir furiously again.. (what you're doing here making and using a roux to make the gravy). keep doing this - eventually there will be more water than flour and what you'll wind up with is a thick gravy type of sauce around the mushroom, chicken and onion. give it a taste, you may want to add a chicken stock cube, or some seasoning, even some chicken gravy granules (although be careful with this as the gravy granules will thicken the gravy even more, you may want to add more water afterwards). when you're happy with the flavour of your gravy, feel free to chuck in some other veg, like your sweetcorn, green beans or peas or all of them.. its your pie, have it how you like!! When you're completely happy with it, pour it all into an ovenproof casserole dish.
for pastry, well.. you have a choice, you can make shortcrust or have a shot at something richer.. the be-ro site will have details of different pastries you can use. You don't have to line the casserole dish with pastry if you don't feel confident doing that (although you can if you want to). if you don't, just cut out some pastry to "stick" around the rim - straight strips that you can fold over the rim - then stick your round pastry "lid" to that. make sure you cut steam holes in it (even if its just a snip snip with the scissors to create a couple of little lines). brush with milk or egg to glaze the pastry, and pop into the oven. if you make sure the raw chicken is cooked before you pour it into the casserole dish you won't need to worry about the main being cooked - just pull it out when the pastry top looks done, which won't be long, i'd reckon on half an hour or so at the most.sammy_kaye18 wrote: »I will take the whole chicken out tonight so it will be defrosted by tomorrow lunchtime, cook it up for a roast tomorrow... then rubber chicken it for a few meals. I'd stir some of the dark meat into the pie to go with your chicken breasts from the freezer. Breast meat doesn't have much in the way of flavour, and the dark meat will add that. You could also reserve some of the breast meat and dark meat from your pie making for a soup if you wanted to. just strip the carcass as much as you can before you put it into boil for stock.
HTH and have fun!
