wow i can't believe how much u have in your fridge. it must be huge. my fridge would prob be filled just with the 43 onion's.
the only thing that really springs to mind is omelletes , or maybe onion soup( never tried it tho)
cheese and salad cream sandwiches( gorgeous)
or how about pizza. even somthing simple like 3 cheese and onion as u have different cheese's.Well the onions have been moved into the storecupboard under the stairs and are currently residing in a few pairs of my mums old tights :rotfl: (its supposed to let the air circulate or something...)
I am a bit of a cheese fiend and get through a huge block in a week I just eat chunks of the stuff
Sammy OH is driving me NUTS already... I've been dragged round the shops this morning even though I told him I'm not spending anything..Went into Lidls to get my milk though and had a look around but was very good and only came out with 2 x 4 pintas :A ...HONEST!!0 -

Off Topic.. heh.. its okay. the tomatoes are long since gone, but the Kale, Celeriac, leeks and so on are growing really well. I never did get any ripened sweetcorn, sadly, i think that was down to the miserable summer - will try again next year. I'm quite pleased with my efforts for the first year but i know i can do better next year. I tried sowing some carrots to see if they'd come up before the worst of the winter weather hit, and they did germinate, but then disappeared so i think the slugs got em. I'm gonna have to germinate everything elsewhere and transplant *sighs*. bloody slugs. got plans to grow some stuff in the greenhouse though. I keep the blog fairly up to date with things - you might want to check there for photos.. I must get back out there soon. the grass needs cutting if nothing else!
when are you getting your allotment?
oh and D&DD - what do you mean.. *help* with the cooking? i'm more likely to take over.. *chortles*.. i love cooking, when people come to the house my OH has to warn them: "come hungry, cos she'll regard you as having spent six months in a famine zone".. he calls it my red cross syndrome. LOL.

onions in tights how odd. will pass that on to my mum tho as she has grown loads of onions in her garden.
Sounds really silly , but does the colour of the tights or the thickness matter ?
i mean will a 10 deneir natural pair keep the onions with more air than a 70 denier black. ( please don't laugh)0 -
OMG I think you are amazing
We are also a family of 5 with a bird and 2 goldfish but my cupboards are bare
I actually scouted round the kitchen this morning trying to find something to bring for lunch so that I could have a no-spend day but no luck. As someone else suggested, can I come and shop at yours??
Looking forward to reading this thread, and definately looking forward to some pics especially of the garden, I just can't believe you can grow so much stuff in such a small space! :T :T :TDFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
D&DD - just went back and read this thread from the first post.. (what drew my attention to it was the number of hits it was sending to the blog - from sammy's recommendation for the bread recipe - and that started it at page 4) ... Your garden looks tons better than mine, okay, granted, you are further south than we are (from the sound of things anyway) but it still looks much better. I think i need tips from you in the gardening department!!
I had to laugh as well at the photo of the shelving: those bright pink bags of bread flour. i know where you shop now, cos i used to buy the exact same thing! (I have to say though, i get white bread flour from lidl now. I find its nicer than the pink ones, but i still get the green ones - stoneground - from the same place, and their yeast.) the shelving looked almost exactly like mine - we have a large cupboard that used to house the boiler before the housing revamped the heating system.. now we have a tiny lil boiler that works like a shower system (heats the water as we run it) and i have a big cupboard, so i put some standalone shelving in and all the dry goods are stored in there. The biggest problem has been finding mice droppings in there (but *only* in there, despite the fact that there is often a bin bag on the floor) so i think they're coming in from the outside, using the pipes as a way to get through to that cupboard...:mad::mad: .. this is down to the upstairs neighbour dumping his rubbish in what is technically his garden infront of our kitchen window. I knew this would happen sooner or later. Anyway, because of that things have had to be moved around so its all tins and stuff that they can't or won't want to break into at the lower levels. *sighs*. so my beautiful shelving is all messed up
anyway, thanks for an entertaining thread - i've thoroughly enjoyed it!

i have now become addicted to this thread and the getting ready for winter thread. Was looking for some advise on what sort of things to stock up on for winter. And also as i live in a 1 bed flat with my DP and Ds i was wondering if there was anything i could grow inside in pots? Thank you:D0

Kethry we sound like twins
the boys friends always say 'We've told mum not to cook us any tea' when they arrive lol...they know they'll be well fed here!I've bookmarked your blog as I'm going to do the onion marmalade it looks gorgeous, and I have a few onions to spare
Jcr hello! speaking of onions..it was an old allotmenteer who lived next to my mum advised her to store them like this (ideally in a shed)he said it keeps them really well and shes always stored hers like it.Doesn't matter which colour/thickness I usually knot each one and just cut it off when I want one, mums always got spare tights I can nickThey are also great to use cut into strips for tying up plants as theyre stretchy

Hi JoYou'd be surprised what you can make from 'empty cupboards' these peeps on here are marvels!!! If you get stuck you can try listing what you have and I'm sure someone will be around to advise.I've taken some more pics of the garden so will try to get them on tomorrow if I can prise a pc of the boys!!! I am a 'crammer'(cram it ALL in regardless of perfect spacing between plants),I always underplant, oversow, hell if theres a space anywhere I'll grow in it :rotfl: I also catch crop so if there is something slow growing eg parsnips I grow radishes or fast growing salad leaves beside the drills so I have another crop while I'm waiting (and waiting ) for the parsnips to eventually appear.
Sorry for these multiple posts ds3's still up and bouncing around!!!
Back again where was I...
ah yes Kethry I'm in Surrey so it's pretty good for growing most things,we can get away with an awful lot and where my garden is really enclosed and down a dip its pretty sheltered in some ways,BUT we live on an old airfield LOL so most things grow sideways...
Must have a better look round Lidls when OH's not with me..I'll try their breadflour when I run my stocks down a bit (only about 39 bags to go...)I have more pics of my cupboards but think most people have an idea of my hoarding with just that one alone!!!
Lollyred hello! My must haves for the winter store are potatoes (biggest paper sackful I can lay my hands on as we get through stacks!),bread flour and yeast,or breadmixes in case of bad weather we will always have bread in,andrex (I can't be without my one luxury!!),butter and lard for pastry making/cakes,jam for sandwiches/cakes/jam tarts/suet or sponge puds, few tins of fruit thats for starters! I got an email from Thompson and Morgan today (seedmerchants) they are doing a new lettuce called wintergem which is suitable for a greenhouse so I may give that a whirl indoors, otherwise there are plenty of seeds you can sprout on the windowsill,I'm experimenting this year to see just what I can get away with..Main problem is lack of light at this time of the year..
Right must lassooo little man and get him off then will update with the days news!0 -
seeing that people are shocked by that list just makes me a little more embarrassed by how much I hord. To be honest that is probably less than half what I had a couple of months back. I've now been running stocks down for 3 months. Still got about 8kg of chicken and 3kg mince in the freezer aswell as other stuff
that's about all that is left of the meats as I have used up the lamb, pork, beef etc (apart from burgers, sausages, black pudding and a few other things I won't mention that are still in there). Running stocks down has been hard as I am a horder, I have still bought things like toiletries (admittedly not many) bread and rolls as haven't had time to bake with moving, dairy stuff, fresh fruit and veg plus some bargains I just couldn't resist
which I took straight to new house. I've still taken 19 bags over the new house so far of food stuffs from cupboards
pleased I used up a bit first (2 bags just herbs & spices, many of them unopened). I still have at a guess enough to fill another 10 carriers as have 2 cupboards and a huge FF to empty. I haven't bought soap powder since last September, or many of the toiletries, 20+ showergel is bad!
I think I should start shopping from home a bit more, pleased I have for the last 2 months as I have saved loads. Most of what I spent was from being naughty eating lunches out when we've been very busy etc. Need to do it some more, still about 4kg rice, 3kg lentils to be creative with aswell as the rest of it. Think I will make fresh pasta and keep all the dried stuff I have as that lasts longer, got 1 1/2 bags of pasta flour needs using (use by is end of November).
Oh anyone know any other use for chapati flour other than chapati's? Getting a bit bored of them and about 1.5kg of the stuff to use up within the next 2 months. One day I might be more organised...........

Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0
