Barclaycard throwing their money around?

Options
I have received an unsolicited letter from Barclaycard telling me they are going to increase my limit but will do a credit search first.

Currently they offer me quite nice balance transfer offers every month and I don't want to jeopardise this by them seeing how much I owe to others.

Shall I tell them to forget the increase, or will this make them more suspicious?

  • Your account isn't micro managed in the way you think it is.

When you say they are telling you they are going to increase your credit limit, do you mean asking if you want an increase. How would declining an increase make them suspicious? Of what?
If you are happy with your present situation, tell them that.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

perhaps not by a person? but maybe a bot

Well, the letter says that they are definitely going to do it unless I opt out or they find adverse data.

Suspicious that I was worried about being out of my depth in debt I guess

I have received letters such as yours in the past from BC but they have never said a credit search would be carried out first. Must be a new thing.
  • It reads as follows:

"Before we increase your credit limit, we'll do a few checks using the latest information we have, and information held by the CRAs, to make sure it's still right for you. Sometimes it isn't possible for us to increase your limit - for example, if your circumstances change, you miss a payment or you exceed your credit limit - and so we may withdraw this offer".

They exchange data with CRAs regularly anyway.

Thank you. How can I find out more about these mysterious data feeds from CRA to lender?

They are merely telling you that to approve the limit they will do a search - other lenders will see a hard search so you have an option to decline if you didn't want that to show like if you had a mortgage application coming up or something similar.

The data they pass back and forth, along with your account activity is what had led to the offer of an increase. This is also what leads to others having a credit limit reduction, APR increase etc.

    Don't overthink it.

While that might sound like a search, the words "credit search" are notably absent.

I'd be stunned if they actually registered a search against your name.
