Interestingly the OBR believe this won't help FTB but actually people selling their homes. Presumably because people will now raise their house price assuming FTB can now afford more

It would undoubtedly be true if it was only FTBs in the housing market, as it is its partly true but it also gives FTBs some much needed help where they may be in competition with other purchasers

Likewise doesn't help property developers that offer to pay stamp duty as a sweetner on new builds.
  • Thanks kingstreet, we did complete on 22nd, I have emailed our solicitor that link in case she wasn't aware.

I suspect it will be up to you to contact HMRC to request a refund. Your solicitor is unlikely to want to deal much further if they have simply handled your conveyancing.

Generally speaking FTBers are only competing with other FTBers.

Expect FTB houses to increase in price with associated marginal increases up the scale.

I think this is an appalling price of opportunism that’s all about headlines and nothing to do with fixing affordability.

If it was a week earlier, I would've saved £3,500.

On the upside, when the Help to Buy schemes were launches, house prices rocketed. Abolishing stamp duty might do the same, which will be an instant boost in potential equity.

You've been an owner for a week and already you're talking the talk :)

    Is this just in England??
Scotland has it's own land tax now. It will be interesting if they follow this in their budget in a few weeks.

For a one or two bed flat FTBers are competing with FTBers and BTLers, surely?

For a three bed house, FTBers are competing with FTBers, BTLers, those who bought flats as their first property, and those who are relocating, surely?

(For any larger property I assume there are relatively few FTBers.)
