It's such a miniscule amount when you are talking about such a huge amount needed to buy a home. Nothing to get excited about I'm afraid.

I disagree, I'd rather £5k in my pocket than the government's.

  • I know I'll have to check with a financial professional but would anyone know If we would benefit from this having exchanged but not completed yet?

    Yes. Only completion counts.

    Is this just in England??

Scotland doesn't have Stamp Duty anymore.

    We have LBTT
  • Although we benefit personally I'm skeptical that this will actually help get people on the ladder. For us (and probably quite a few other FTB) it's a welcome addition to the furniture/ DIY budget but not the difference between buying and not.
  • Crossing my fingers this is correct..."the UK government said that a planned cut to stamp duty land tax for first time buyers will apply in Wales up until April 2018 when the tax is devolved."

  • Interestingly the OBR believe this won't help FTB but actually people selling their homes. Presumably because people will now raise their house price assuming FTB can now afford more
  • Solicitor says we can't get a refund since we completed and paid it this morning :(

See if you can raise a complaint to HMRC. Could potentially work.
