  • I hope you can be gifted a calculator, but if not, my DS’s teacher told them to buy a scientific calculator from Poundland as they do the same job as the more expensive one. Hope that helps.

What size clothes etc do you need to DS’s residential? Xx

This might be a good option for now, but not sure how old your DS is? If he's coming up to taking formal exams then they need specific types of calculators otherwise they're not allowed to use them in the exams x

Casio or T1 are the brands they need, I think!

He’s 14 now, and was told this when he was 13. It was a Casio one we got in £land. Xx

Hi WB :) Nice to hear from you. I can understand DS needing a calculator but never heard of pupils having to supply their own stationery. All DS needs in High School is a pencil case, pen, pencil, ruler, eraser and calculator. And 20p to be able to buy a new pen if it runs out :D They give everything else out like compass, protractors etc. although he has got his own.

The logo thing is completely unnecessary. The TV programme I watched interviewed a Head who said she wouldn't mind if struggling families sent their children in the right colour top instead of a logo one, but I couldn't help thinking that was quite divisive and sounded like the old days where you knew who the 'poor' children were because they had to stand in a different line and hand tickets in for free school meals. If she wasn't that bothered why not just get rid of the logo ones altogether and let everybody wear the same from the supermarket.

I'm sure there's a fund for pupils who can't afford uniform at high school, is there something similar at primary. Can't say I remember anything but things might have changed. xx

    Wow, that's a bargain then! :T

I'm assuming just the basics? It doesn't say and the letter only came Thursday morning :o It just states stationary on the list.

That's not very helpful of them!

I have plenty of stuff I can send if you want (pens, notebooks and probably more if I have a proper look) - it would help with my decluttering. Also if he needs a lanyard for an ID pass I have a VAST collection of them as I keep conference passes for a year and then forget to take them for recycling the following year!

I'd take silverqueen up on her offer of a calculator (or two!)... it's amazing how many of them get 'lost' or 'break' spontaneously

I'm not sure what to suggest about uniform. I'm pretty sure these policies have been challenged in the past, but others will probably know more.

ETA - what about second hand uniform? I know most of mine was hand-me-downs from family friends and the school also had a second-hand shop.
  • Some councils offer school clothing grants, others don’t. Unfortunately my council don’t, but there are usually offers of uniform that has been grown out of on Facebook so that could be worth a look wannabe. The school may also sell ‘pre loved’ uniform that wasn’t collected from lost property Xx

    Evening or morning :o

    Thank you all so much.

    DS is 10

Another Mse'r helped me look for help with uniforms etc but unfortunately there's nothing like that here. Our council don't do it. I do keep looking in the SA and charity shops but I've never seen anything. Will always keep an eye out though ;)

I do use hand me downs greenbee. We appreciate any we receive. It doesn't seem as common now as when I was a child though. I do pass down between my smalls too. DS's uniform is a different colour now for his last year. I never seem lucky with their jumpers from school as by the end of the school year they are fit for rags! Although I supposed it is worn alot only having 1 of them.

Tea he's only ever took a pen before. However if he didn't take one it wasn't a problem. This year though they have to take it and they have equipment/uniform inspections. Anything missing leads to 'fines' from their reward points. Apparently it's to get them ready for high school as (fingers crossed) the high school I hope he gets a place at is very strict too. So at least he will be prepared rather than jumping in head first next year.

Morning WB :) Getting them prepared for high school is no bad thing. DS has uniform and equipment inspection every morning and there are also points given out if anything is amiss. There's even a 'pinch test' to make sure boy's hair isn't too short. None of this 'you can't touch me malarkey' at his school :rotfl: I must admit, I like strict, so no complaints from me.

Had a quick look at uniform and your council is like ours - there's help for Y7 and Y9 so bear that in mind when he moves up.

Is he getting excited about his residential or are nerves setting in. I'm sure he'll have a fantastic time when he's there. I think I offered a case/holdall, so if you still need anything like that drop me a PM and I'll get it sorted for you.

It's a bit cooler today but still nice for getting out and about. Have a lovely day. xx

    Morning tea

Thank you he is getting nervous but excited too! I think he's worried about being away from home.

We are on our way to town to an appointment. Then we will probably visit the museum and library. Free entertainment not to be sniffed at.

Hope you all have a lovely day
