Georgina, I think those types of costumes are really good. One lad in DS's class went as Edmund from The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. Normal clothes, which let's face it are more comfy than any nylon dress up costume :rotfl: a wooden sword stuck in his belt, the book in one hand and a box of turkish delight in the other which he handed out at the end of the day. x0

Weird you should say that Tea. DS is going as diary of a wimpy kid as we have the pe kit
Youngest refuses to wear dress up so is going to go as a 'birthday girl' its the day before her birthday so she can get away with it :rotfl: DD1 no idea but something we already have for sure.

I have to confess, I am really glad that my two are old enough now that they don't have to do book day.
I once dressed them up and Charlie and Lola, which was mega easy as DS didn't want to wear a costume.
One of the mum's dressed her three up as princesses....the eldest one was Kate!!! To this day, I don't figure out how that was a Disney princess???0 -
Sounds like you've got Book Day all under control and I'm sure you'll come up with something for DD1. Wimpy Kid is a great one and looks really good. Another one I did was cat in the hat. School trousers, black t-shirt, mascara whiskers and nose (I was not paying £5 for face paint :rotfl:) but I did buy the hat.
I'm glad mine are older now as well PurpleMum although I do sometimes miss those days, but not that much0 -
Book Day!!!! As a retired Infant teacher, the staff always used to despair of the costumes. Yes Disney stuff is OK, but it is hardly what we called real books. You can't go wrong with Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl,
The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe. We had one pupil who came as The Naughtiest Girl in the school, an Enid Blyton book. Her normal school uniform with an old cut down tie(charity shop), her hair in messy bunches and a badge saying 'The Naughtiest Girl in the School'. A boy came as Harry from Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs. Normal uniform with a plastic bucket which he had made cut out cardboard dinosaurs for inside it. Very little financial outlay and actually relating to proper children's books rather than Disney films.
If prizes were given they would have always been given to the children who had thought about it and improvised, not the ones where mummy bought them the flashiest Disney costume.
A really good one was Oxford Reading Tree, any clothes plus a tree cut out and stuck on clothes with some of the ORT titles on the branches. This one was really clever and cost...zilch, just a bit of time.0 -
Just remembered another one , an absolute favourite, The Magic Faraway Tree. A reception child did this, she had normal clothes on the front and on her back had a drawing of a tree and at the end of the branches were pictures of who the children met in the tree, Moon Face, Saucepan Man and Silky the fairy. On her front she had stuck pictures drawn by her (and we are talking Reception!!) of the magic lands they visited. The land of Spells, Land of Treats and the Land of do as you please.
I am pretty sure she won prize for this, it was her interpretation of how she thought the characters would look.
If your little ones like crafty things this could be a really good idea for the youngest one.0 -
One of my mates kids went as a Nac Mac Feegle for book day and won first prize
Already had the mad long red hair, an auld kilt and a toy sword and his mum covered him in sky blue body paint. The wee fella looked fantastic as "Daft Wullie"

It is important that we know where we come from, because if you do not know where you come from, then you do not know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you are going. If you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong.

HillWalker I have to admit I'm sat here giggling at your comment about 'proper books'. I can sort of imagine you saying it in a teacher's voice as well - which I say with affection by the way
I wouldn't mind if mine read the back of a cornflake packet as long as they were reading.

Love all these book day ideas.
Last year my son went at Stick Man - my husband got a large cardboard box, stuck it together in a cylinder shape and cut holes for arms and his face. He wrapped it in crinkled up brown paper and the rest was drawing. I wish I could share a picture, he did such a good job!
We will need to get thinking about this year. Contemplating James and the giant peach or fantastic Mr fox since we have read both of those recently.
I agree wholeheartedly on dressing them up as real book characters. My son's class was full of iron man and hulks.Sealed Pot Challenge 075

That made me laugh, especially the teachers voice, which according to my husband I use all the time when wanting something done.
Books however are my 'thing' I have always loved reading, loved words, poetry even grammar! I blame my mother she was a stickler for spelling and it has rubbed off on me, correct spelling always. I am half Irish so am pretty sure my love of words harks back to my celtic ancestry.
I was an only child and spent many hours with Enid Blyton sitting 'in the cupboard under the stairs' with The Famous Five and Mallory Towers. :rotfl:0
