Perfect baked potatoes

I can almost sort of vaguely understand the 'convenience' argument - put really? Buy a bag of sounds, bake em all and freeze if you really haven't got time to put a potato in the oven and leave it there for an hour whilst you do something else. Sure baked spuds take time but that take absolutely zero effort.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

The ones available to the catering trade actually, if you buy enough, work out to be as cheap as buying potatoes and baking them - you also have to bear in mind that a lot of the places that buy them don't necessarily have ovens, so they're looking for the convenience of something you can microwave. The McCains one have an absolutely staggering markup but I suppose the convenience appeals to some people.0

When I saw them advertised I thought that they would have have been useful for DD when she was at college and only had a microwave to cook in (she was in a catered hall). Then I remembered that she didn't have a freezer either!
People buy pre-cooked mash so I suppose they will buy these.0 -
Our Panny combi microwave does an oven-quality jacket spud in about 12 minutes.
Spud in.
Press button.

not everything is to do with cheap is good and convenience is bad - why feel the need to judge people who choose an easy option? Maybe some people dont want to have their expensive ovens on for an hour or more for the sake of a spud and some maybe just work too long hours to care about the "homemade" option. How about an elderly person who just finds these types of foods quicker and easier and can afford it? It takes all sorts in this world and its a shame that sometimes some OS people can be a little holier than thou
Personally I am a bit of both - I love a good batch cook in the slow cooker sometimes and do some good old basic food and then .......my bad.......I have quite a few packets in for when i just cant be ollied. Shock horror I have even bought ready made mash on occasions  and yes I bought some ready made pancake mix for 50p last night cos it was 7pm and I was tired and they were easy..... I know so shoot me :rotfl:
We should celebrate the fact there is lots of choice and not point the finger at anyone for theirs imo0 -

I have a tiny, tiny freezer, a tiny, tiny oven and try and use the oven, albeit small, as little as possible. Yes, you can microwave a potato and I have done that often, and finish off in the oven if I have something else cooking.
There are many reasons why I find the frozen ones useful. I am not embarrassed to admit it. I won't use them often, but I will use them.0 -
Another case of companies creating a need that does not exist.
I'm oven-less at the moment, and I make baked patatoes in the mw all the time, had a lovely one for lunch thankyouverymuchmccain!
(not OS proper but better than this rubbish)
I small one took about 5 minutes, more or less the time you save because it's pre-cooked you have to add because it's frozen.
The sad thing is at some point you'll get some youngster saying they are buying those because they don't know how to make proper one.. well actually you can do them exactly in the same way.
Same thing with frozen rice, it tastes disgusting!
Some people buy it because they can't make proper rice. How difficult can it be to boil rice? and what about using rice cookers (all the all-in-one-I-can-do-everything-except-the-washing-up I use)?
I can understand the convenience, and we can all be lazy at time, but it's the fact that people by using these products un-learn how to make basic food that saddens me.0 -

Oh we really like the frozen rice with the vegetables in them from Mr A, yes, we can cook rice when we want to but when we get in from work (at ridiculous o'clock) and still have our little man to feed and bath and the housework to do and the clothes and pack ups to get organised for tomorrow, it's a good standby. And as we normally make it with batch cooked and frozen curry or chili etc I really don't think that I'm betraying my 'home-cooking ethos' too much0 -
The worst I've seen is pre-cooked (without veggies or anything) rice. Although as the other posters have pointed out I suppose there is a market if the only cooking method available is a mirowave rather than a hob. But all that packaging going to waste... doesn't seem right.0

i have bought the already cooked rice if im buying ready meals as a cheap alternative to getting a takeaway but i always burn rice so have started buying the boil in the bag sort now instead. would never buy these jacket potatoes the threads about though but then i like them done in microwave so dont have to use my oven for an hourHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0
