Most people would have their freezer running regardless though (and isn't a full freezer more efficient? So technically it could save you money!)0 -
Interesting thread and viewpoints. I haven't tried them yet so can't comment but shall be hunting some down now so I can do a masterchef taste test :rotfl:0

I tried batch cooking (or baking) spuds and froze them.
When I defrosted one it was just mush, totally inedible, it was like I had frozen a tomato.
I had to throw away about 20 of them. All were fine when cooked, but when frozen they just went to nothing.0 -

You should try the rice trick:
Using white rice (e.g. basmati), measure your rice with a cup measure. For this example, I'll say 1 cup of rice. Pour into a sieve and rince for a minute or two, until the water runs clear. Tip into a saucepan that has a good lid. Boil the kettle and add twice the quantity of boiling water to the rice (e.g. 2 cups of boiling water to the rice). Cover the pan with a lid and bring back to the boil. Boil for 2 minutes and switch off the gas/remove from the burner. Allow to sit for 15 minutes. And voila!
1 cup of rice is perfect for three hearty servings (for big eaters) or 4 servings for more regular eaters."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'

If I can't be bothered to cook or i'm in a rush and need something tasty and filling, it's easy to just stick them in the microwave for 5 mins, heat some beans, grate some cheese and eat!
When I first saw them advertised I laughed at the sheer laziness of them, but i'm now a convert!0 -
Interesting reading!
Just a small point, but they are ideal for my DD who has autism, and it's hit and miss with her cooking skills, dependent on mood she's in and stress levels. She has been buying take aways far too often as she's too tired to think about cooking anything. She has cooked "proper" potatoes in the microwave but prefers oven cooked. These fit the bill perfectly for her; something quick when she's hungry and tasty too.
For myself I will experiment with a "real" potato and see if it tastes ok after freezing.
I'm sure it's a confidence boost as well, preparing/cooking a meal.
Our local farm shop do chopped up frozen fruit, such as apples, and a crumble topping. One of checkout ladies said they're popular with disabled & elderly people, can see why it's nice to be able to feel you're making something.0 -
my first thought when i saw them in mr ms's was what a waste of money ... they were on offer for £1 and i thought that was a bit expensive ... but then i went and picked up my bag of frozen mash and bag of roasties and realized what i was doing/thinking was a bit contradictory :rotfl:
i had a look at mccains website, and the link to thier facebook page shows that there are more positive than negative comments ... guess its all down to personal taste. they also seem keen to get feedback on any negative comments, so thumbs up to them.wading through the treacle of life!

A friend of a friend of a friend grows potatoes for McCain.
The grower often gets a bag or two at harvest time, and a dozen or so came my way. They were the nicest jackets I have ever eaten, when questioned they are a specially bred potato and aren't available in supermarkets ect, or even as seed potatoes to buy.
I tried the McCain frozen jackets, and to my absolute joy, they are the same as the potatoes from the fabled winter of 2009!
So shoot me, I have several boxes in the freezer, and had one for my lunch yesterday, incidentally with a pouch of john west's tuna with a twist, and very nice it was too!
They save me putting the oven on for just 1 thing - which is as far as I'm aware not OS (but seems to have several advocates on this thread) when I'm home alone.
They have their place, but as my favorite way to cook a jacket is in foil in the embers of a fire, its not really practical on a day to day basis! Please don't judge people as harshly as you seem to be doing just because they are doing something differently to you.0 -

sorry for the late reply jessbrown100,I love my actifry,it makes lovely roast potatoes, chips, wedges(fresh potatoes and oven chips),stir frys,(meat and veggie ones),sausages cook to perfection, and according to the recipe book, you can cook, rissoto, currys and chillies, fruit crumble, baked fruit etc..tho i havent tried those yet,I think the chips taste like "real chips",but not necessarily like chip pan chips...but then i havent had a chip pan/deep fryer for years,i always used oven chips before the actifry,
one thing i will say is that,as much as i love it...the chips are not a patch on Chippie shop chips.LOLSlimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.
