Perfect baked potatoes

Things like honey roasted ham and any other roast - yes, yummy yum. But would I turn the Rayburn on for 1 potato? No.
That's why I mentioned putting 6 in for more than one meal.
I can't see why we can't point out how simple it is to cook potatoes in an oven properly; the OP said they didn't have time to cook - but faffed for 20 mins with the microwave and then threw the food away. Putting jackets in the oven takes 10 seconds, and then nothing has to be done for over an hour. It's the least faffy meal you can possibly cook. Just pointing that out.
Surely we are allowed to point out these things still? Or have the government outlawed that as well?If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
If you can do Baked Pots in the breadmaker could you do half a dozen at a time in the slowcooker and crisp them up in the oven before saving them in the freezer ?Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

???? Have you just come enraged from Discussion boards or something?:D
What would I do with 6 potatoes?
There is 2 of us, my OH will just stick out his fat lip at being served potato and I don't want to eat potato for 6 days...:D
What is all this about? Nearly everyone said oven. And some (you) said it like it's crime to use microwave. I just put in my opinion. I have been there - what to have for tea... jacket potato... ummhh, erghhh, hour and a half... microwave here I come.
Sorry I ever mentioned microwave!! I promise I will chuck mine out as soon as I get home!! :rotfl:0 -
I find resting time is the key. I p.r.i.c.k it with a fork and then microwave on high power for 10 minutes and then stand for 10 minutes.
After the initial 10 minutes it won't be cooked. After standing time it will be. If, after the first 10 minutes, you keep cooking it, it ends up overcooked and hard.
This is for proper sized jacket spuds. I see some people only cook them for 5 minutes - either they are little spuds or you all have high-powered microwaves.
I only do one spud in the microwave at a time - microwave cooking times need to be adjusted for different quantities and I'm not sure how to adjust it for multiple jacket potatoes.
If I'm doing more than one they get done in the oven - yummier anyway with the crispy skin.0 -

I'm just pointing out that there is more than one way to Rome....and some are easier than others.
Your Rayburn might be a gas guzzler to turn on...but I bet the baked potatos are nice from it, and I rarely bother with toast now that I don't have range toast...similarly a microwave only baked potato doesn't hit the spot for me. (I don't know I've ever had a half and half one). Likewise, for me there is no MSE buying a hundred things cheaply rather then one at a good price when its only one I want ..similarly I'd rather eat something delicious rather than something ok. But others are in different situations and different priorities.
I do appreciate though that OP was tired and it was late than she wanted...but also that she said if she couldn't do it at all, not just last night.
Anyway...neither of us were offended, so that's really what is important...that and that OP can get a decent meal by which ever method
I didnt even think about something to eat until after i got my little one to bed, by which an hour in the oven would have meant I would have been falling asleep in my potato!
Thank you for all your advice though, will defintitely be trying all the different methods to find the perfect spud. I am notorious at not thinking about meals until its time to eat so dint think I wll be throwing away the microwave yet, but will certainly try freezing them. I never knew you could! Learn something new every day!!:)0 -
Not sure what baking trays in the oven are all about. If cooking in the oven just stick them on the racks - they crisp all over then with no need of salt/oil/magic cream or anything else
Have to agree the combi microwave does do great jacket spuds ( and pizza and pasties and sausage rolls )
The frozen ones we use in work go in the industrial micro wave for about 2 mins before cutting through and giving a wee blast if needed0 -
Just to confirm I did a medium sized potato in the breadmaker last night for 1 hour 5 minutes and it was beautiful with a really tasty crispy skin! Yum!I'm so sorry if you were enjoying this thread and mine is the last post!!

Quite a few people who I've served jacket potatoes to over the years have asked for the recipe, which really used to throw me at first as you wouldn't think there could be that much variation. Turned out all of them did their jackets in the microwave. I haven't got a microwave, so they get a little tiny bit of olive oil & salt rubbed into the skins, they then get stabbed throught the middle 2 or 3 times with a sharp knife, then they go in the oven at no.6 for about an hour & a half depending on size. I've only eaten (to my knowledge!) a couple of microwaved jackets & I didn't rate them. Done properly in the oven, they come out more like the bonfire night jackets you can remember having when you were a kid.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever
