I had my cashback card declined yesterday which was most embarrassing. Used it today though expecting the worst & went through fine - phew! So looks like it was just a blip.0

I just had a phone call from capital one apologising for yesterdays promblems. They assured me that any cashback i "could" have earned yesterday will be added to my account. Not sure how they calculate it?! Would they know that i'd tried to use the card? Did ask the lady on phone but didnt really get an answerAm i here to save money or spend money......hmmmmm0

When I spoke to a CS rep on Saturday (at the 5th attempt) I found out that the problem was caused by a system update at C1 that brought the computers down either because of a fault or because it took too long. She said that the instore tills were phoning Mastercard for authorisation but because Mastercard couldn't contact C1, they were being refused. So presumably they can just check the MC records to find out who was refused.
I shall wait and see.

Anyone else out there had problems with using Cap1 Cashback card online??
I've had several transactions not authorized....
.........received an explanation from Cap 1 today......apparently the problem lies with Mastercard and the new Mastercard World brand........seems some banks have not updated their systems to recognize it
I am assured that it is a priority with Mastercard to have it fixed ASAP !0 -
Mine has worked online over weekend, tried in Morrisons today....no joy, bit annoyed as done weekly shop, and missing out on cash back. Spoke to someone who said it was a technical issue and could be my chip - first time I used in a shop, asked if connected to weekend problems, said no, said there were no records of my card being used today. Will try using on a minimal amount when I can next get out, they really need to get themselves sorted.2008 wins. DVD player together with Now quiz/Now 2008 DVDs,£25.00 Real People, pair of tickets for London Eye.0

I work in a major retailer and you would be suprised how many cards get rejected, usually at busy times. Sometimes it will reject all visa, sometimes one particular bank. It also depends on the floor limit of the particular retailer (the amount above which they ask the bank for authorisation). Your card will be accepted for £50 in one store and declined for £5 in another. That is because the one store will not ask for authorisation and risk the transaction (which costs them less because they are bearing some of the risk) and some, like my company, refer all transactions. The machine contacts the merchant, the merchant contacts the bank. If the bank does not reply it is considered a decline. No reply can be for many reasons, sometimes for instance the merchant does not try to contact the bank. All these are computerised transactions and can fail for a thousand and one reasons. If it happens to you just stand back and chill.Very unlikely.
It will just be a temporary technical problem somewhere - these happen to all credit card companies from time to time and sometimes even the entire UK VISA or Mastercard system goes down - affecting cards issued by everyone..
