  • So what did they do, fail it, adjust the light, then pass it?

    Exactly what happened.

When the tester puts it on the computer, he'll usually flag it up as a fail, then PRS - Pass, Rectified at Station.

But if it's failing on something else anyway, or it's going to take more than a non-trivial amount of time, he'll fail it and do it later then retest. This is the common-sense way to do it...

It failed. They rectified it. Then it passed. It cost you no more than it would have done if you took it away, adjusted the headlamp beam yourself, and took back for retest within 14 days. What is your problem, exactly?

Alternatively, you could not adjust it correctly yourself and it failed again.

    However:
I was a Tester many years ago, but Headlamp Alignment was part of the Test then even so. I used to inform the customer about the problem and ask if they wanted it adjusting, then done it, given permission. The result was a happy customer who would probably return. I don't understand what makes you unhappy in this case.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
  • MoT tester done his job, Sounds like a reasonable fella. One of my car failed on n/s headlight beam to low. I adjusted it myself and came back shortly after and got a pass.

Another car of mine, I ordered some tires for my car on spare alloys I had. I fit said alloys to the car that had bad tires. They Put it through the MoT then fit the tires. Annoying as it stays on the cars history, But no real issue.

So yes you're are being unreasonable.

    Am I unreasonable?

If you book your car in for a service and MoT, would you expect a fail on: Offside Headlamp aim too low (1.8).
Yes. (Well I wouldn't as I look after mine so they never fail on headlamp aim)
This is such a simple adjustment, I would expect it to be done either before or during the MoT. They didn't have the brass neck to charge for a re-test.

The MOT is an inspection only. There is no onus on them to do it although some will as a goodwill gesture but they're not required to. I'll ask you this:

Given you are supposed to keep a vehicle to the MOT standards at all times and not just for the test and that you'll have been servicing it in line with the manufacturers recommendations then why did it fail on low aim at all? Personally I'd be asking the garage who serviced it why they didn't do the job properly. If it is such a simple thing then why didn't you do it before the test?

Tbf headlamp aim isn't really the sort of thing you can check yourself. Yes it should have been done on the service. And yes ops being a tad dramatic
