Kids keep leaving the lights on

Comments

  • It's funny, when I was a lot younger and still living at home - t'was I who went around the house switching lights off when I saw them.
My parents always left them on!

I'd been taught about saving energy and CO2 emissions at school and also watched programs on TV about it.

I think rather than bribing them - if you try and teach your children reasons for turning lights off and how they're helping by doing that. Show them videos of polar bears or something if they love animals. If they saw it as important then they would remember - in fact they'd probably become more alert to it than you.

Could find yourself being plunged into darkness at any moment :rotfl:

So am I and I don't care. I know how little electricity a lightbulb uses these days and it adds up to a couple of quid a quarter.

Never understood the fascination with turning lights off. In terms of cost its negligible if using the right bulb. Far more important things to nag kids about

But education has to start somewhere - yes the cost might be negligible but then they'll be turning the heating up and leaving the windows open, wasting food etc.

Yes, it,s about learning how to lead an ordered disciplined life and to be mindful of the wider picture in the small things you do. If children can become conscious of these from a young age they have a better chance of adopting such habits automaticallynin their adult life.
It isn’t about “nagging” them. It’s “educating” them to the small realities of life and helping them to understand the part their actions play in the wider scheme of things. It good parenting.

Remote control light switches and an app on your phone to tell you which are left-on. Shut them down at will! :D

You can then shut-off the modem or some similar device if they have transgressed or reward them in other ways if good.

    Haha! Yes!

  • Shouting 'Switch the light off' is better for their teeth than bribing them with sweets.

    Very true :T

  • Terrible here as well, like others for the few pence it costs I'm not that worried.

However I have a 10 year old who keeps telling me to turn off the lights :rotfl:or goes behind me and does it :D

They learnt about energy saving at school and hes been like it since, the same with recycling although I am pretty good with that anyway.

Isn't it funny how as parents we can say something forever and they won't listen but get taught it by someone else and they're the ones preaching to us :rotfl:

  • I'm trying to teach them to be environmentally conscious as a whole anyway so it's about saving money and the environment, the bigger picture really, as you said bertiewhite.

I'm combining this with the whole reduce, re-use, recycle theme, minimising food waste etc, taking them to food waste cafes, teaching them to refuse plastic where possible. That last one they've been reminding me on lately while my head's been focused on other things!

We have hive to control the heating and you can get light bulbs that connect to it. Handy for turning the lights off when out if we forget. Also my children have a habit of leaving their light on after going to bed and I can remotely turn it off from the app on my phone/watch which I’m sure they love me doing

Stop the treats for doing what they should do, start the penalties.

No wonder kids today fail in the real world.
