Santander refusing refund on cash withdrawal fraud!

Hi fellow users,
So last night someone at cashpoint in Edgware (North London) withdrew £300 from my account. Now I live in Hounslow (West London). I was home the whole day with the card in my sight. However I called Santander today and they have refused to refund me as they believe ny chip can’t have been copied. I don’t know what to do I’m down to my last £30. Is it normal for Santander to be usually this inconsiderate?

Getting a refund for claimed fraud involves a little more than just ringing up and asking for your money back. Read the T&C’s associated with fraudulent payments on your account and follow the procedures outlined there.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

If Santander have confirmed your card was used, they won't refund. Did you report your card missing ?

If the chip and PIN was used then you need to be thinking about who else has access to your card...

Saying you live an hour away from the ATM used is hardly going to be a persuasive defense.

All you can do is go to the police and get them to investigate and check surrounding CCTV at the exact time of withdrawal. It wouldn't be hard to see who withdrawed it.

Banks don't just refund money because you say you didn't take it out or live away from ATM!

How do you know it was last night?

Did you check your balance in the morning then again in the evening?
Did Santander tell you the time of the transaction?
Is it possible it could have been done on the weekend and posted to the account on Monday?
If so, were you in that area on the weekend?
Have there been any other fraudulent transactions on the card?
Has the card now been cancelled and a new one ordered?

  • Who has their card in sight at all times?
Mine is in a wallet which when I am at work is in my work jacket but at home normally on the mantelpiece - where somebody in theory could get hold of it, use it and put it back.
How they would get hold of the PIN is anybody's guess because that is in my head only.

Your card and PIN being used is quite a coincidence.
