When I was a student we used to nick the loo rolls out the student union. They were the hard paper ones too, so we must have been pretty skint!
I reuse wool. I knit a lot and when the kids finally grow out of a jumper and it's a little too frayed at the edges to pass on I unravel it, wind the yarn into hanks, wash it to get the crinkles out and reuse it to knit squares for blankets. If I find a cheap sweater made of suitable yarn in the charity shops I do the same. It's amazing how many cashmere jumpers with holes in the elbows you can find in charity shops.
I like raiding skips as well. I've got an allotment and all my raised beds have edgings made from wood found in skips, I've got cold frames made from old windows etc etc.Val.0 -

I'm sure i saw a thread on the debt free board where someone said they used to pinch toilet rolls from work lol.
I remember seeing that thread, something about the things that people had resorted to in hard times? If I remember correctly, a lot of people admitted to taking toilet roll from public places, but that was the least of it!
I have never taken toilet roll, but did have to resort to using the napkins that I had bought for christmas many years ago.
If I have to put anything nylon in the tumble dryer, white vinegar does not prevent static, so I have an old take away container with j-cloths in that I have cut into small squares. I add a small amount of very well diluted fabric softner and end up with my own, far cheaper, reusable, bounce type sheets.
I flatten toilet rolls to help prevent people taking off more than they really need (DD2 is a horror for that).

Don't be pressurised into supporting your son at uni. My Dd always tries the same even though we only live on a low income. She has no bills only transport etc, as lives with her Nan.
If he can't afford to go, he should accept the consequences.
Education after school is not compulsory and it doesn't help you get a job.
I also believe that the more you provide, the more lazy they are.0 -

OH and I always snuggle up together under a blanket in the winter, very cosy, and we used to have our cats snuggled up with us a lot of the time too, lol!Instead of buying bottles of handwash jut buy a very large bottle of cheap shower stuff and keep topping up your handwash bottle.
To save even more use bubble bath, which often has the same ingredients as shower gel, usually costs less per ml, and can be used as shower gel and handwash.dogstarheaven wrote: »I reuse my tissues for blowing my nose on
Use flannel bedsheets instead of cotton as they're super-warm
I never use a tissue just once, unless I have a bad cold, and when it's ready to be binned, I use it instead of loo roll (I take it from my pocket for my own use, I don't pile used tissues in the bathroom, lol!) before flushing it, which also saves on bin bags in the long run too, lol! I also use flannel bedsheets in the winter and have a fleece under-blanket, and for added warmth OH usually goes to bed at least half an hour before me so the bed is toasty when I get in, lol!
I use every scrap of everything I can, turning bottles of shower gel, bubble bath, shampoo etc upside down, and then rinsing the bottles to use the last dregs for cleaning the bathroom, before putting the bottles into recycling. I use any bits of blank paper from junk mail as scrap for writing lists etc.
OP, we all do things we're not proud of when broke so don't feel too bad about nicking loo roll, I've never done that but my mum did years ago, she'd had too much to drink and came out of the pub loo with a whole roll in her bag! On the subject of loo roll, when we were kids it was a rare luxury for us to have that in our house, and there were always newspapers in the bathroom for that purpose, lol!Weight loss challenge 2/10lbs

I feel bad now, please forgive me, I need support, and cannot take any criticism at the moment as I am so down, but anyway thanks and keep the tips coming.
Don't feel bad about it Fairy, here take this tissue and wipe the tear from your cheek.
Well it's not a tissue really, it's a piece of loo paper i pinched from work.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Hi thanks for all your tips it has been very helpful, I feel bad about the loo roll thing to be really honest I do not do it regularly, I have done it like at the end of the month when there has been no money left in the bank and I am down to my last 2, I promise I will not do it again, I feel bad now, please forgive me, I need support, and cannot take any criticism at the moment as I am so down, but anyway thanks and keep the tips coming.
Don't get down, I've done things in the past that Im not proud of, but keep going and try to do the best you can.
When it comes to your son, it's very commendable that you want to help him through university.
There may be ways he can save himself to build a university fund with part time work or even delaying starting his studies until he has sufficient funds to complete it. If he want's to make it he will find a way.0 -
If you buy a coffee whilst out, but don't take sugar, as you have already paid a price which includes the sugar, take what you would have put in your coffee home and put it in the sugarbowl.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0

I have found that by using less than recommended woith soap powder the clothes are just as clean .I watched my son-in-law the other day put three big scoops into the machine as he thought the more you put in the whiter the clothers get .As I am primary care for the boys (my DGS) after 8.15 in the morning during the week I mormally put two washes a day on for DD I only use one scoop and its more than enough and unless their clothers are very mucky (not often) its sufficient.Their washing machine is on twice a day at least everyday of the year as there are seven in the family.so a lot of soap powder is used. But in the past three months the consumption has be reduced dramatically.I will put a handful of soda crystals in to soften and clean the towels as well.I almost never use conditioner only white vinegar on their washloads either as I think it mucks up the machine.I saw in tescos yesterday how much the price of soap powder has shot up and couldn't believe I would see the day when a large packet would cost £20.00 !!!0

My aunt uses 1 tea bag to make multiple cups of tea. If you can't face doing that, invest in a teapot (come to think of it, I really should start doing that myself).
I do wash my dish clothes. In fact, I might start knitting some as there are loads of patterns on line. I have a big bag of DS old, tatty baby clothes and I plan on using them for cleaning rags.
I'm going to charge my phone at work tomorrow instead of at home.
I re-use foil (proving it isn't in too bad a state).
Here's one my aunt did. At my Dads wake, there was a buffet and my aunt proceeded to get some plastic containers out of her bag and stocked up. It wasn't just one. It was 5!!!!
Speaking of plastic containers, I reuse them - ice-cream, margarine tubs etc.
I cut the toothpaste tubes in half to scrape out the last remaining bits. Ditto for shampoo too.
Some good ideas here - but charging up the phone at work is also theft and not a good idea if one wishes to keep ones job either.
Re the stocking-up at a wake - I would have gone straight up to her - taken the containers off her and said "I'll let you have them back when you go...and meanwhile 'show some respect' ". If there was any food left at the end of the wake I would ensure it was given out to everyone ELSE to take home with them and she would get nothing.

....and I agree that the O.P. should not be stealing loopaper and I wouldnt have someone as a guest in my house if I could see they had that "on the lookout for a chance" look on their face ....0
