  • Reading through some of the tips its great to see how we are all tightening our belts even more. When I was in MrT's yesterday I was talking to one of the shelf stackers and she said she had never known it so quiet in the store .My local one was refurbed about 6 months ago and its enormous,Tescos also bought another piece of land to the side of it and as yet they haven't developed it as I think they realise that they have come to the point where shoppers are being a lot cannier than they used to be.Its rare even on a Saturday that you have to wait very long at the tills, and folk are making their shopping last a bit longer now than they used to.
I only go about every ten days if I can and if I need milk, or just one or two items I only take enough cash to cover it That way I know I can't overspend.I have returned to using 'cash only' and regulate virtually everything I buy on a 'do I need it? ,can I do without it? ,can I adapt something I have already got instead' basis and have cut back an awful lot on what I used to spend on shopping.
  • I scrape out or dilute or turn upside down every pot jar or tub to get the last bit out. I too squeeze loo rolls so they don't run freely on the holder. old towels get cut up to make cleaning clothes or rags for the car wash. store onions and garlic in old (washed) tights. I believe everything has a second use it's just interseting finding it :-)

  • Fairyface - don't give up. Nearly all of us have been there - that's why we end up here.
I've been thinking though, saving a bit of loo roll aint going to get your kid to uni. If you ar that hard up at the end of the month then I would suggest you need more help. Make use of the free advice on here to help you clear debt, budget etc. There are lots of people out there who will gladly assist you and get you out of the dark hole.
Chin up - it WILL get better.

Ps - If I were you I'd ask my mates for loo roll. If I can't even ask that of them then they ar not real friends....

Well I ended up admitting on another thread that I do wash out freezer bags, especially if they have just had bread crumbs or something in them. I was always taught that everything should be used a least twice.

Old teatowels become dishcloths (I bleach them first) then the dishcloths become floor cloths, then the floor cloths become decorating/car washing/oil rags......
  • some great ideas here folks.
  • I use 3 ranges for washing gel & fabric conditioner:

Branded for my clothes (tend to itch with cheaper ones)
Supermarket own for towels, bedding etc (itching doesn't seem to happen with these, maybe due to length of time next to skin/wearing pj's)
    Supermarket value for pets bedding
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!
  • I buy rollon deoderants in bulk when they are bogof, then when I think it's empty I use an eggcup in the bathroom to turn it upside down and get an extra week.
  • This week we have all had colds and been a bit poorly. We ended up buying a frozen pizza and eating things like tinned spagetti on toast coz cooking and baking was too hard. It has made me realise to have home made simple things like pizza and pasta sauce and bread in the freezer always for such an eventuality.Being ill can really blow the budget.

Great idea OldTractor i'd not thought of that. It is true though when we're ill we just want some warm, easy comfort food so pizza and pasta, maybe some garlic bread too is good to have in the freezer on standby. :)
    on a mission !!! :j
