A potato masher is perfect for lifting poached eggs from the water

it's also good with soup if you like it mostly pureed but want a few chunks left in

Make your own water filters...cheap charcoal in a small bucket with holes, then place into a larger containers...add rainwater or tap water.Replace the charcoal every now and again.
    Ideal if you BBQ anyway.

when working in the garden first dig your nails into a bar of soap so that the soap gets packed under them then work in the garden as normal

when you go to wash your hands you won't be scraping dirt out from underneath them :p

Cereal bags are brilliant as freezer bags or for putting sandwiches in.

bread bags are great too fill up half way twist then pull the bag up over itself again and tie or clip shut

bread bags are also good for picnics make sandwiches then stack them up inside the bag (it's a perfect fit ;) ) then take them with you :p

Don't buy expensive kitchen roll, (such as Bounty)! When was the last time you used a sheet of kitchen roll twice? Ie, mopped up a spill, wrung it out, put it to dry and then used it to mop up another spill! Buy cheap shops own brand roll packs, which are more than adequate to do the job.

also don't throw j cloths away!

they wash up nicely as do sponge/scrubby combos and those scrubby pads (like rough plastic pads)

j cloths will wash many times before they are too holey to use, make sure the last use is to clean the toilet or another grimey job then toss them

also be sure not to accidently put any of these in the dryer

To get rid of silver fish, or ants, just introduce a spider.

Use ordinary soap instead of shaving soap (mentioned by Mr. Gillette years ago)

I guess that would only work for people with electric cookers as gas is instant on/off and doesn't retain any heat when it's switched off.

ahh but both gas and electric ovens retain heat for a time

i use the heat to either finish stuff off or as a free way to boost the temp in the kitchen (we have storage heaters so this is a boon at 3pm on a very cold day!)

Hate the smell of Fried Fish?
Burn a couple of tall candles in kitchen to reduce the smell.

hate the smell of fish, onions, garlic etc on your hands?

wash them then rub them vigoursly over a stainless steel spoon etc it takes away the smell quite well!

It's very sensible to change the batteries in your smoke alarm long before they run out. The best time (easy to remember) to do it is when the clocks change in spring and autumn. The batteries will still have plenty of life left in them and can be used for other gadgets

if you have a 9 volt battery an easy way to test how much charge is left in it is to quickly touch it to your tongue

the sharper the 'bite' and the stronger the metallic taste the fresher the battery

allow to dry for a few moments before putting back inside anythign!

this does NOT work with other types of batteries!
