If your cheese is starting to get a bit sweaty, grate it and freeze it in small handfuls in the cheap 500-a-roll sandwich bags from £land (same goes for YS cheese).

  • It has now been discovered that upon freezing, plastics leak some of their chemical components into the food/drinks they contain, and these are very nasty for human health.
Being prepared with some frozen milk etc. in the freezer is an excellent idea though, so why not save then wash and rinse thoroughly glass bottles with screw-top lids (such as Shloer) to use for this purpose. Remember, always leave the top 1/4 to 1/3 empty, to allow for expansion during freezing, otherwise the container could break and you'd lose the contents and have the mess to clean up.
p.s. Same danger with microwaving with plastic lids - best to remove lid and cover container with a sheet of kitchen roll.

Use a trouser hanger for tablecloths, especially large ones..................fewer crease marks.

And use another for table runners. ;)

I've got one of those 5-in-1 skirt/trouser hangers and I use that to keep all the Christmas table linen together.
What a great idea. I hate it when I've been so careful in ironing a tablecloth/runner, store it carefully, and then you can't even tell I bothered next time it's used. We'll be putting the Christmas linens away this week, so this is a definate help.
  • Peel garlic cloves, then store them in a jar filled with olive or veg oil, keeps them fresher for longer, and you will also have garlic oil to use in your cooking.

I got totally sick of only getting use out of about half of the garlic I bought and have resorted to buying tubes of garlic puree instead. I think your idea's great - no wasted cloves and flavoured oil too. Win-win.
  • How exactly do you go about doing this? I guess you have to shake it but was wondering if you'd mind giving a bit more detail.
Yes you do shake the cream (in a jar with a lid). The fat globules get knocked together and stick to each other, eventually separating out completely from the liquid portion of the cream (making buttermilk which can be used in scones etc.) You then strain the butter and squeeze out excess buttermilk. Salting it then extends its shelf life. The easier versions are 1. use a cake mixer to do the work for you; or 2. if you have a bread-maker it will probably have a butter-making programme on it. All three methods use the same principles though. It seems too easy to be true, but it works.
