I too am frugal with water after all its not a finite resource even though we live in the UK.When I have my shower I always stick a bucket underneath the shower as the water has to travel from my tank upstairs to downstairs bathroom so I usually have at least a bucket of coldish water before I get the warm water coming through. This I use for various uses from watering the pots on the patio to flushing the loo during the day.Why waste somthing you've paid for its cash going down the drain.I have two flasks in my kitchen so one kettle of water will fill one with hot water for tea and the second I make into a flask of coffee to use during the day.I try to think of using everything I have to its best advantage.Mince gets bulked out with lentils or porrige oats,I can usually extend a meal to several extra portions for the freezer with this .Bendy and past it veg becomes tasty soup and bananas that are on the turn get made into banana muffins or a banana custard. If I do have a tin of something I will always rince it out with a smidgen of water to get the last bit out and old clothes get recycled eventually into cut up cloths for cleaning which saves on buying J cloths.Even my tail end bits of wool get made into stripey blankets which go to a charity called the Linus Trust which I have been making blankets for for the past 6 years.
Old free newspaper get used as a lining for my craft table when I'm painting then put in the paper recycling bin when they are beyond anything else
Small empty yogurt pots make excellent individual pots of jelly which go it the fridge.
The backs of Christmas cards make excellent shopping lists and the fronts get cut out and made into decorations and decoupage for my new Christmas cards. I so rarely chuck much away my dustman must think that a womble lives in my house as he rarely gets much from my bin:):)
Also when serving up my dinner I have a smaller plate than normal as when its full it looks more:)its bigger than a tea plate but smaller than a dinner plate and its suprising what savings you can make this way I also have a soup starter so it takes the edge of my appetite and find that I am fuller for longer

Forgot to mention that now i am trying to conserve/save/use less heating, i use the hot water bottles every night for the kids and I. Instead of emptying the cold water from the night before, i pour it from the hot water bottle, back into the kettle, therefore saving more water0 -
WTBSE...you are not getting any residue from the rubber off the inside of the bottle doing that are you? Just wondering if it is safe...

menu planning and shoppinga t home from the pantry and freezer are the biggest money saving things for us as we buy the things we like and know we will use when they are on offer and therefore keep our grocery costs quite low

I get free prescriptions because I have a thyroid condition
turn things off if you're not using them! no stand by, no lights blazing
keep an eye on your direct debits esp for utilities and claim back any amounts in credit
we have a duvet under our bottom sheet on the bed as well as over us so we are very snuggly warm in bed with no need for heating in the bedroom unless baltic
read newspages online and dont buy a daily paper or expensive magazinesBlah0 -
Popperwell- oh no, i dont mean we drink the water from the hot water bottles (yuk! did it once by accident, made a cup of coffee)..sorry, i shoud have been clearer.
I meant that i pour the water from the previous nights hot water bottle back into the kettle, and use that water to refill the hotaterbottle for that nightHope that makes sense?

We waste far too much money, but have started taking steps to stop this.
So far, we have bought a greenhouse and the associated paraphernalia using birthday money so it hasn't cost us anything and we've tried to grow some vegetables. Unfortunately, we started this too late in the year for anything to properly grow, but it's been a good practice for next year and at least we have all the things we need, so next year all we need is seeds. The one thing we have managed to harvest is some baby new potatoes, they are very small but look nice (and should be bigger white potatoes but nevermind). These were the one thing we didn't grow from seed, we just planted some spuds we had in that had started rooting! We're going to eat them tonight. Most of the other seedlings died of thirst when we were on holiday
The other thing we have started doing today is mealplanning to try and cut down on what we spend on the weekly shop. And we're going to try and visit the farmer's market more often for our meat rather than getting it in the supermarket.0 -
