In your position years ago with VM I set up a Gmail free email that is not linked to VM then went through updating contacts - surprisingly it didn't take that long as there were many that I was happy to abandon
.
From then on I have been free to switch without worrying - you can be stuck if your email is that important, hence removing the connection between internet provider and email.
As it happens I have ended keep returning to VM and do still have the email addresses, but it is no longer a consideration in negotiations.
BT have got wise to this and offer to let you keep your email addresses running ... for £7.50 per month .

Always have an email account that does not depend on you sticking to a certain provider. Aol, Gmail, Hotmail, something like that. We have a each of those and more.
We've had our email for over 20 years and can't imagine how difficult it would be to have to change it with every institution:eek:
I also have a Gmail and a yahoo email but find they're a pain as don't come straight to your computer, have to log in on the website all the time.
Sometimes hassle is not worth the money saved!!!!0 -
