Westie I have spoken to you before about thyroid problems, well today my endo consultant has said that I should consider having the thyroid removed and survive on thyroxine, to say I am not keen is an understatement, my dh is on thyroxine and it's awful.

Pfft they are looking for an easy way out. I'm angry on your behalf  They've got this notion that hypothyroidism is so easy to manage with just thyroxine.

On the forum i'm on where they have had graves and there treatment was either removal or RAI they fail to get well on t4 only even a combo of T4 & T3 becuase the dose is titrated by TSH. You are use to much higher levels of thyroid hormones anything less and you'll feel !!!!, they'll never give you the dose you need. To feel well. NDT is considered the best treatment.. But you wont get that on the nhs :(
Something unexpected happened which made me smile and still continues to make me smile.

I have no medical knowledge and it may affect people differently

Dh is on thyroxine and although he is often tired I see a huge improvement to the way he was years ago
As you know he runs quite a bit and has a heavy manual job putting up wooden fences.

    Hope you are keeping ok.

Thank you mys mac, I suppose I am wary of out of the frying pan into the fire:o, my dh and ds both take thyroxine and although it's hard to tell with ds, lazy brat, my dh feels he's more tired than before, that may be just age though as he forgets he's not 21 anymore. I am also reluctant for another scar, I already had my parathyroid removed could pass as Frankenstein's bride with all the scars:rotfl:

Thanks westie, this just confirms my thoughts, RAI not an option due to my other issues, so cut it out is the solution, as you say I have been functioning on a much higher rate than they would consider normal on thyroxine so I would never get the dose I needed. I have said I am really not keen but think will progress this and insist it won't happen.

Good evening all and Izzie - can you say why thyroxine is awful please. I am in the middle if radio iodine treatment for thyrotoxicosis and was told it was the treatment of choice, not thyroidectomy, this possibly might be because of my advanced years.?? Unfortunately by partly destroying the thyroid it is likely to result in having to take thyroxine.

I am reading backwards by the way, I can now see there has been much discussion on this subject

    Here's my thoughts for what it's worth:D

Eat a balanced diet.....less refined, plenty fruit and veg, do some exercise and have treats now and then.

Burn off more calories than you eat and you should be fine:)

    And plenty jacket potatoes:rotfl:

That's all I've been doing and I've lost 40lbs in 12 weeks! (the missus hates me now though :rotfl:)

40 more to go :o
