like antidisestablishmentarianism?silvercharming wrote: »Uh, normal english. I'm not sure myself. The whole point of a dissertation is to fling big words about and write long sentences. The idea is that whoever marks it will just assume you know what you're talking about without reading it properly.

Yeah like that!
*whispers* I once actually did use that word in an essay...
although it was a dare, so I'm sure we can overlook it?
And for those who question the value of a university education - have I ever needed any of that rubbish in my life since? Have I heck as like!0 -
what does it actually mean anyway? lolTotal 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

That you don't want to get rid of the church of england0

erm, I *think* that
disestablishmentarianism was people who wanted to separate the church and the state...
so anidisblahblahs were the people who were against that. but wouldn't they just be establishmentists because antidis is a double negative.... arrrhhhh .head gone sore. ouch.
am going to check that on wikipedia.LBM : August 2007my debts: less than this time last year....!DFW Nerd Club #706I'm Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts

Kind of a pointless word, isn't it? It's not even the longest word in the dictionary any more, so it is officially useless.0

I was thinking along those lines AA with the double negative, shouldn't it just be Establishmentarianism, but I think there IS a slight difference - Estab... just means FOR the Church, whereas Antidisestab... just means AGAINST getting rid...? No, I've confused myself. So what IS the longest word then SilverCharming?Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0

the double negative thing is because you are anti - disestablishmentarianism. The dis-whatever was already a movement, so that's how it came about. There are grey areas about why it's not just 'establishmentarianism' but I'll leave that for political theory 101.
As for the longest word... I'm not the oracle, but I'm pretty sure its something medical or chemical.0 -
