Another loud vote for reinstating Dunstonh here. We often disagree, but he is a valuable contributor and MSE will be poorer without him/her.

I've just come up to speed on the London Capital and Finance thread and I'm amazed. I had ignored it up to now as I would have nothing useful or good to say about the company as I avoid the type of financial products they provide. However, if the two very long posts that seem to be the origin of the issues haven't broken any forum rules I conclude that the rules need to be changed. If this has resulted in the loss of Dunstonh then it's pretty ridiculous.

Ultimately MSE makes the rules and as much as we contributors might feel some ownership in reality we have none, but without us MSE forums would not exist so it is to MSE's benefit to listen to us. Right now I have a similar opinion of the MSE administrators as I do London Capital Finance, I hope that will change.

I'm shocked at this apparently disproportionate action.
As said above, if a post happens to cross a line somewhere, then deal with that post.
But do not bar the poster (except for persistent or serious cases).
It is particularly ironic that the adverts in question deserve to be called into question in my opinion. The man in the street is unaware of the risks he faces, without help from people with greater knowledge.

MSE doesn't moderate the forum, the task would take up too much resource.
Well, someone does otherwise how would you know to ban someone.

What MSE has done is a very poor advert - maybe many people will leave before they're pushed. Or just to protest such cavalier action.

dunstonh, if you're still reading, please do what someone earlier suggested - do a blog - we'll all read you.

Please reinstate dunstonh. He is one of the forums most valuable assets!
  • This sort of thing is an inevitable consequence of the sale of the site. Naturally, the purchasers will want to recoup their massive outlay through commissions earned by enticing members towards whatever pays them the most, but seeing that the ethos of the site is saving money and not losing it, what we have here is a conflict of interest.

Please could you also re-instate Dunstonh. If his posts crossed a line then by all means delete them, but don't ban him. He has been a member for 13 years, made 90,000 posts and been thanked 55,000 times - and those are proper thanks from the financial boards not the Money Saver Arms!

He is one of the most helpful posters on the whole forum and has spent a great deal of time teaching us novices the ins and outs of pensions and investments.

I don't know why he got banned, but please invite him back. The boards are a poorer place without him.

    Ver unfortunate news indeed.

I second reinstating Dunstonh back to the forum. He has been a valued member of the forum and I have learnt many things from his posts. As an experienced IFA himself, he has been sharing generic, broad based advice to less experienced members on financial related issues with good respect and civility. As we all are familar with the commonly used maxim goes, Always Do Your Own Research'. All knowledge and advice here should be viewed critically. I don't see a problem with different opinions and viewpoints, but people has to always qualify the information provided themselves and critically analyse whether it is useful or not and if it agrees with their own situation. We need as broad a spectrum of viewpoints and analysis and ideas so as not to skew the information shared here to help us in our informed decision making.

I hope the MSE moderators see sense and bring Dunstonh back. And I hope MSE is still neutral and all for open and free discussion without influence from external financiers. And I hope Dunstonh don't feel too aggrieved to quit the forum all together. I can see that we value your views.

    Cheers!

He's not been banned but has had his Posting Privileges Removed which is more of a suspension. With luck he'll be back with us shortly.
