Because you gave the switching sites your phone number and the sites allow businesses access to the information for a cost in real time as you ask for prices.

If you just want to look for energy prices, go to the Citizens Advice Bureau site as it will not track you nor store your information.
You only need to tell it your address, current tariff and annual energy used to get accurate results. But again, they will not save that information nor use it against you.

Use this for the same results, but the possibilty of cashback too :money:

  • Hi, I have just received the first invoice for my employer after we moved to a new gas supplier and, although we have a Smart Meter installed at work, the final reading from the old supplier and the new one do not match.
The final reading for the old supplier is higher than the new one, which means that, if I hadn't checked the readings, we would be billed twice for the same consumption.
It is not the first time that this happens. Last year our electricity supplier also provided a lower reading in the middle of our contract, for no apparent reason. I had to fight with the company to get the bill amended and obtain a refund.
It pays to check all the readings, not only when you move to a new supplier. It however puzzles me that these "mistakes" happen, and strangely enough in my experience they always seem to be in the supplier's favour...!
  • Videos of these new SMETS2 meters have started to appear on youtube, the extremly poor display on the E470 landis and gyr models looks to be continuing with no backlight unless the buttons pressed which takes someone off the credit screen in prepayment mode and needs to be cycled through, however it looks better the large bulky external GSM hub SMETS1 model.

Adding to the above comments if there are boiler probems reported as well as a warning triangle the supply is capped at the gas meter, any argument as happened to me they threatend to dig up the road if access to the meter wasn't granted.
  • My dad died a few years ago and since then I've taken over organising all of the bills etc for me and my mum (I still live at home). We're not got a smart meter and I've never had to submit a meter reading - my mum has always said they just turn up sometimes are read it themselves as the meters are out the front. Is this not normal?

Please can you post more info on your boiler / smart meter communications experience Michaelw.

Are smart meters smarter then we are led to believe?

I'm tempted to have a type 2, but your experience suggests that a gas cooker or boiler fault for example would cut off all my gas appliances. Smarter then smart?

In the "old days" a meter reader would call every 3-6 months to obtain a manual meter reading.
HOWEVER, this hasn't been the norm for several years. For example I haven't had a visit since 2015!

The danger is that the utility supplier will default to estimated reads -and as many who post on here can attest, the estimates are rarely accurate and frequently badly over or under the true reading ,which results in either a huge catch up bill, or the Utility Co. sitting on a pile of interest free cash!!

Have you checked what the bills say? You need to make sure they have an A for actual and not E for estimated. Also are you on a fixed tariff with your supplier or standard variable rate (SVR)? If the latter then maybe you ought to look into making savings by fixing.

It is a good idea to read your meters monthly, that way you don't get caught out by an unexpected bigger bill or a meter that's gone doolally.
  • Hi
Does anyone know if all new installs are SMETs2 or when this will happen?
I don't intend getting one unless it is SMETs2.
  • Is anyone having trouble with Solarplicity smart meters/monitors ?
  • I switched to a 1 year fixed tariff with EDF about 8 months ago. They kept trying to get me to have a smart meter. After the 3rd time of refusing, they now tell me it's in my terms and conditions that I have to have one. If i don't they say they will switch me to the higher standard rate. I checked the small print and sure enough it's there at the bottom of the terms and conditions.
As i still have 4 months to go on my fixed rate, i will be facing a £60 charge to switch to someone else.
Has anyone else been bullied in this way and is it now standard practice for all the big 6 providers.
Can I insist that the £60 early termination fee doesn't apply because it's them making the change.
