as said the rules are in place for a reason. edinburgh buses run a lot of single deckers with extendable wheelchair ramps, lowerable suspension and 'wheelchair/pram' spaces.
nearly all parents know it though i notice loads will let a bus go rather than fold the buggy even with 2 adults there.
never seen them mention not leaving the folded pram unattended
i get the argument of doing it solo but its not the 1st time ive offered to hold a baby to let the parent fold the buggy down. its the safer option than fighting with those contraptions.
im using the bus a lot lately and have been pretty impressed by the service we get here

i dont mean to sound uncompasionate towards people with the buggys, but what if the bus driver said look we are full but on you come anyway with your buggy and your shopping, then the bus gets further down the road ends up in an accident and people get killed including young mothers and children,im sure the bus driver would again be at fault here so he can't win.

and as for helping folk,i have found myself in the position where i have offered to help someone,be it letting them in front of me in a queue when i have lots of items and they dont,or helping the buggys on the bus or simply holding a door open for someone, now i dont bother my ar5e,as nobody thanks anyone any more for helping, society just expects things to be done for them and not to give anything in return,so this is my reason for not giving up my seat on the bus,not waiting a few seconds to hold a door any more, not letting the granny in front of me to only draw her pension at the post office when i have 20 items still to post.
i know my attitude towards things like this only makes it worse, but im hardly going to make it better am i?

If I was waiting at the bus stop and it happened to someone waiting I would have offered to help with the pushchair folding and carried it on for them, like I have done many times in the past, wouldn't have just ignored them.
One day I might be more organised...........

Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb
  • I held/sat many babies on my steering whislt we wait for mum to fold up the pram, I'ts all good fun! If you can't work with people then don't drive busses!

As a mother myself I'm furious... The pram could have been folded and the mother would have got a place on the bus. I also think that a little kindness from passengers on board could have been useful too. I'm sure someone could have spared some space by folding their buggy.
The same goes when a bus is full, you have to get the next one but then you notice that there was space in the back anyway had people moved back in the bus.

I have to strongly agree with this, I have lost count of the amount of times I have been left at a bus stop in the pouring rain, the older generation are always going on about how rude people are today and that no one ever helps etc................I have had people (older and normally women who should have more understanding) slam doors in my face when struggling to go through with a buggy, people standing and watch me struggle to get on and off a bus with a buggy, shopping and a 2 year old I could go on all day!! I own a car but choose to use public transport to go into town because it is cheaper and better for the enviroment, but some days after not being able to get onto 3/4 buses I am forced to walk a 6 mile round journey. Maybe a little kindness from people every so often would help, and the jobsworth bus drivers:mad:

If we all carried on through life with this attitude what a sorry world we are going to live in, I always thank people for helping/opening a door and do it for others regardless of weither I get a please or thank you, just because other people are bad mannered doesn't mean you have to be too!!!

  • A lot of parents these days buy those huge, very expensive and nigh impossible to fold down quickly and flat prams.

If they just stuck to a nice lightweight, super fast to close with one hand and a foot whilst holding their child on their hip prams it wouldn't be a problem would it?

Though its give and take really the mum should have collapsed the buggy when she could see the bus was comming and the bus driver should have got out to help her put the buggy in the lugage area.

There's something not right in our society today as people can stand by and watch this happen.

What has happened over the last forty years? I used a buggy and buses - didn't have a problem because I ensured I had the buggy collapsed and ready to enter. I did not expect to be helped - my child - my responsibility!

Whatever is the matter with modern mothers? Supermarkets give you endless spaces for 'mother and child' parking - why? When you park you have a buggy or pram with wheels - why do you need to be so close to the entrance? My sister had to fight for four years to obtain a disabled parking badge to enable her to park in a space wide enough to allow her to get out of her car without contorting herself into a position of great pain.

While on the subject - please what is the purpose of the 'child on board' stickers in cars? Are the rest of us supposed to drive in a better manner? Don't all you who use those signs think we don't anyway? We do care about our own safety as well as that of other road users.

Britain is becoming a child-centric universe. Of course we all appreciate that children are the next generation and, as such, require special care. But so do many others in our society and they are disregarded on the whole.

And before you make assumptions, I am not against children - I have had my own after all.

And lastly - a plea - could you please stop your brats screaming in supermarkets and elsewhere? I would have quickly removed a child of mine that had done that but no - the aisles are filled with out of control children emitting that piercing screetch which I, for one, find excruciating.

The bus driver said he couldn't help me, regulations or something or other. The driver apologised that he couldn't help but it was to do with company policy etc.

A big round of applause for the compensation culture developing in this country. This is another result of what is happening. Bus drivers are probably not allowed to help lest they get sued. The greedy snots out there are causing misery for everyone. One of these days there will be no public transport in case we sue.
