It all depends what it is and what it's worth. I've given small prizes away to family and friends and sold more expensive ones... even, on occasion, to family!'...luck came to those who left a space for it.' Terry Pratchett0

Re. "Never give anything away for free"
It is your choice to do what you want with the TV. However, if you are comfortably off, giving it away to someone who hasn't got a decent TV would be a nice gesture. Don't assume everyone living on the breadline is there through any fault of their own. If you don't know anyone in that situation, then many small community groups, hospitals, local hospices would welcome a donation of a new TV.
"Giving" makes you feel really good and is so much better than receiving.0 -
I'd seriously consider getting a new friend !
If the new telly is better than your old one, then keep that one and offer your friend the old oneGus.0 -
Your prize, your choice what you do with it- only give it away if that's what you really want to do.
A real friend would not put you in that position.0 -
I was selling some computer gear second-hand and the buyers wanted it for less when they twigged I'd got it for free from work. Oops. Was already cheap.0

Sell it - the competition entry wasn't free! The only reason I'd give it away is to donate to a charity so they could use it as a prize.0

I gave most of my unwanted prizes away to family, friends and charity, only if no one you know has a use should you consider selling it, but not to a friend.
I made over £100k in prizes and cash over 5 years until I got bored and wrapped it in, the cash was always mine to spend however the other stuff including holidays was offered out if I had no need, immediate family followed by other family and friends.
The thrill was in the chase after all.
Giving can be good too.0 -
Sounds like your friend is a bit of a f r e e l o a d e r. Sell the telly. Or keep it and invite the friend round to watch it on a 'bring a bottle' basis.0

I think prizes won are assets and you can do with them as you please, keep, give, sell - your choice. It clearly doesn't please you to just give it to your friend or you wouldn't have posted. There is no moral dilemma, this is just about someone else feeling entitled to your stuff and I think that it being a prize is fairly irrelevant.2017 Wins: 2 tins of soup and 2 soup mugs, Herbal Essences Shampoo and Conditioner, Brita Water Bottle, Bramley hand and body lotions.0

There's a phrase called "Mate's Rates"
I'd say selling to them for half the retail price would be very fair.
If it was something valued under £50, I could possibly understand it, although personally I would not ask for anything for free - I'd always offer something unless it was offered to me unconditionally. The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.
