why are you painting your walls with undercoat. You should be using emulsion, undercoat is for the woodwork.
Just paint over the old colour with the new coloured emulsion you want, may take 2 or 3 coats if the colour is strong underneath

Btw, what's the best way to get paint off your hands?

Best thing is not to get paint on your hands in the first place - Get yourself a box of nitrile or vinyl gloves and use them while painting.

Ditto - or a pack of decorators wipes .

Just a thought, but the undercoat for a wall is water-based and so should just wash off - please tell me you haven't been using wood undercoat on your walls?

Btw, what's the best way to get paint off your hands? I've been rubbing away with vegetable oil, but no joy. Cheers.

I use a pan scrub.

Ok so I measured the walls and I've still only got around 26sqm painted out of a potential 42sqm. Still seems a bit short.
That's about normal. First rule of painting is that you always need more than you thought. That makes it look cheaper when we buy it.

We started with an undercoat because we're painting a light colour over a strong one. I'm not sure that my silver grey will ever look right if it's sitting on a base of bright pink. It says nothing about wood on the tin.
  • What exactly have you bought?

Undercoat is normally either water or solvent based and used before applying a top coat on wood.

If you wanted to cover over a strong colour I’d have used an obliterating coat with a good trade matt emulsion like Dulux Supermatt first.

If it says "Dulux trade undercoat" on the tin and covers up to 17m2 per litre then it looks like you are using solvent based wood and metal undercoat.

You need to use a water-based emulsion, which might be tricky if you have got fresh oil based undercoat on the walls :(
