    Mortgage-free Glee!
    Hi FB,

Hope you have better luck than we did. I moved to a Tesco CC about a year ago and they gave me a credit limit of £6,300 which they refused to re-evaluate anytime before 12 months. We needed to us a 0% card for £8,500 earlier this year and had to go with the Play card.

    Cheers,

    Billy

  • Hi all,

Just a quick note to say I'm still keeping an eye on the MFW forums. Been sorting out paperwork and such like in recent days. Just about caught up.

Away in the morning for a few days - half term 'n' all. Back on Thursday when the BoE challenge and MFiT-T2 challenge will get some attention - haven't ben tending to them in recent weeks.

  • Morning all,

Find myself in the unusual situation of being the only one in the household up so far this morning. May have something to do with the clocks changing...

As you may have caught me mentioning lately - I've purchased a laptop. This has been mainly used for web browsing, but I've also put a copy of Microsoft Money on it so I can update accounts etc. But, the problem being that I've got some files on the PC, some on the laptop, using the laptop but some files I'd like to refer to that are on the PC etc.

I've been researching the use of an online backup / synchronisation solution and after looking at a few options, I signed up for SpiderOak yesterday.

Without wanting to plug SpiderOak too much, I'll let you read their own why use us page here:

    https://spideroak.com/whyspideroak

What drew me to SpiderOak is the fact that your files get encrypted on your own PC before being backed up, thus they have no access to your data. Plus they automatically give you a version history for each file!

Their standard free offering is 2Gb of storage (hey we're on MSE), but you can use a refer a friend link, with gives both of you an extra 1Gb storage with each "friend" that uses your refer link.

So, I'm going to do just that in case anyone is interested:

    https://spideroak.com/download/referral/35d0ffe024b152e2bfc20a38179c4e68

Additionally, if you use the above link, plus enter the promotion code 'hurricanesafe', your standard free account will be upgraded from 2Gb to 5Gb and you will still get the 1Gb refer-a-friend freebie, giving 6Gb of instant online backup!

Note: The promotion code worked as of 29th October 2011. May get withdrawn at some point.

Please let me know if you use my link!

Thanks FB, just done it, have been meaning to sort this out for a while, so your research has saved me some time :j.

Right, about my Christmas shopping list, when do you think you'll have time to research it for me ;)
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Hey, thanks Gally. Have just booted daughter off laptop and I can see that SpiderOak is already showing my storage as 7Gb.

Think I can have up to 50Gb as referred additional storage - one down and 49Gb to go!

Don't know if I get some sort of email notification saying my storage has gone up - haven't checked yet, but thanks!

As for Christmas shopping - can't help out too much there, but knowing you, it will be a case of price comparison sites and cash back sites to make sure you're getting the best deals...

    Part of email from SpiderOak:

"It is our pleasure to inform you that another free Refer-a-Friend gigabyte of storage has now been placed in your SpiderOak account. This additional space will be available to you shortly and will be reflected within the SpiderOak application."

  • So, started a thread in the Credit Card Stoozing section here:
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3435903

The date in the diary is 7th November. Just picked that date out, as I'll need to have a credit card up and running by 1st December so that I can switch over from the normal cards to the 0% card and thus pay minimal repayments and divert the rest of our funds to savings. Three weeks should be enough time!

Should have a good chance of this working - the only sticking point may be how much credit limit I'm given. Mind you the last 0% CC I applied for was from Virgin Money and I got £5,900 credit limit.

Note to self - stop quoting yourself... :rotfl:

So, 7th November is just over a week away. Was intending to apply tomorrow instead of 7th to be absolutely sure I get the card before December, but with tomorrow being Halloween, I wasn't sure if I'd get any quiet time, so I've just applied for the Tesco CC a few moments ago.

Good news is that I was accepted and given an initial credit limit of £5,200 which I'm delighted at. Was hoping for north of £4k, so that's great news.

Application took less than 10 minutes - the only "issue" is that their application prompted me to think about what I wanted the card for and specifically mentioned "A credit card isn't suitable if you need ways of financing your mortgage debt" :rotfl:

Why not? :D Switching £5,200 of mortgage debt (currently) at 2.5% to credit card debt at 0.0% works well for me.

Suspect I'll get until around 28/01/13 to repay the card - possibly a week or two later, depending on if they start the 15 months clock from today or when I actually activate the card. Application suggested I'd receive the card within 5 to 10 working days.

    I'll keep you posted.
