Brexit, the economy and house prices part 5

Whenever I see Tokyo on news reports, the people are all wearing white face masks to try and filter out the pollution caused by the population and density
Is this really seen as progress and what we aspire to for our own cities?
First and foremost people need to breathe
The face masks have nothing to do with pollution. Tokyo isn't even particularly polluted.
After the war there was wide scale deforestation around Tokyo in the mountainous areas around Saitama and Kanagawa to use as lumber for building materials.
The trees were replanted with Japanese cedar, a hardy type of tree that grows very quickly and provides (slightly lousy) timber for construction. It's also loaded with pollen that around 50% of adults are allergic to.
In the summer all this pollen blows down off the mountains and billows around Tokyo. Hayfever in Tokyo was almost unknown before this. People wear masks to try and filter it out.

It's also considered polite in Japan, if you have a cold, to wear a face mask to protect others.0 -
It's not but if you do not have experience of living in area your view is not as valid as someone who does. The infrastructure could be improved but the cost would be astronomical and properties would have to be demolished. As it is the rest of the country is alway complaining about the money spent in London.
More competing demands .... greater squeeze on resources.
If London does grow by another 20% this coming decade, then it might be a case of spending a big chunk of limited resources just keeping things moving there.0 -

Personally, i was hoping we get a proper right wing Tory party out of all this, not a bunch of wets.
Maybe this will be the push some of them need. The referendum set expectations they can not meet.
Corbyn is doing his bit to push Labour towards the Momentum lot. So we might see clearer left/right politics perhaps.0 -
The referendum set expectations they can not meet.
Nothing more, nothing less.
The extremist brexiteer dogma that this meant we had to leave the CU and the SM also in order to 'properly' leave is now being pushed back on and it's about time.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -

Ha. It was sold many times over by the prominent Brexiteers. You might have forgotten that bus. Or what about the Liam Fox : trade deals with the world notion. Heck, even Trump said it would be a "beautiful, beautiful, thing".
Oh, there's expectation alright.0 -

Oh, there's expectation alright.
Many prominent Brexiteers also stated during the campaign that 'nobody is talking about leaving the Single Market' or portrayed the Norway option as a viable one.
Let's not hark back to the lies, misrepresentations and deceptions of the Leave campaign, that nonsense on the bus or what Trump said, but stick to what was actually on the ballot paper.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -

Well, I can't really disagree.
It was one of the worst campaigns I can imagine, from all sides.
I've seen more due diligence in company takeovers, and we are talking about a major change for a nation state.
Did Cameron understand the words "risk analysis" when he put forward the manifesto commitment?0 -

No one has "stopped training youngsters."
If you speak to small business in recognised trades they will all tell you the same thing. They are inundated by young lads who now have to be in education until 18 because the government wants to pretend they aren't unemployed, looking for work placements to complete the practical modules of the plumbing / building / engineering NVQs they are all doing.
No country needs that many plumbers.
The alternative is just to stop inventing silly ways to make youth unemployment not look like the crisis it is and start investing in industry that will create actual jobs.0 -
The comments on that are making my day. The Shouty McShoutfaces are going into shout meltdown.Mass civil disobedience will result.... as an example,a million people refusing to pay the TV licence, will manage to concentrate a few undemocratic minds...Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0
