Interesting article in the FT about the EU's post Brexit budget.

Talks about the shift in budget priorities, away from development and agriculture, moving instead to defence, border control and the digital economy.
Also, wealthier nations will see their rebates reduced over a period of five years. Whereas for the less wealthy funding can be cut off if their judiciary comes under threat.
There is still the possibility of some change before the meeting. It's an interesting article and worth a read. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? For me racism is racism. I do not understand why anti semitism is being called out separately.
There is almost and I say almost a suggestion that anti semitsm is worse than other forms of racism.
We should under no circumstance allow degrees of racism creep into any discussion of racism. There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -
So you should have mixed feelings about the new trade deal signed between the EU and Mexico.
Why?
I am frequently told on here now that EU trade policy is no longer our concern.
Well, it's true. We can't comment from a half-committed position. Equally, the EU should not concern itself with how mainland UK organises it's trade with NI.0 -
So the perennial problem of the British consumer not preferring British produced goods is a good thing is it.
We have had recent comment from well read people on here that the UK doesn't really make anything.
A cursory browse across the internet for 10 minutes will tell you that is wrong.
It just takes a little effort to take an interest. That's all.
I can demonstrate with little effort how UK made product has a longevity which far exceeds the equivalent stuff coming out of China. If you define value via Total Cost of Ownership, then we do compete. If your interest is in tomorrow's landfill, then we don't.0 -

Dont think I have ever said that.
Just flagging up the fact that the massive German trade surplus with its Eurozone partners is a thing and going to be a bigger thing going forward.
Perhaps British consumers are better Europeans than their German counterparts and have embraced the European single market ethos more than the notoriously tight and parochial Germans.

There is at least one website that helps you find things that are made in the UK.
https://makeitbritish.co.uk/
There is a lot of things that we make here in the UK, and I am trying to buy British when I can these days. Like you, I tend to find the quality is a lot better than the Chinese stuff, and I generally find customer services is lot better too.
This started with making sure I bought British food whenever I could, and I found that British pork tasted a lot better than that had been shipped. So now I tend to buy British meat, and fruit and veg when I can, and especially eggs as British ones are far safer than their European counterparts. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

Nearly two years since the referendum - it's getting silly now.
Yep.

Latest instalment of the TM fudgathon on the customs union today. Sooner or later she will need to decide on who shes going to upset with this. Both scenarios have epic consequences for our politics in my view.
The fact of the matter is she can't command a majority in Parliament for anything other than a Customs partnership or relabelled Customs union that broadly mirrors the existing arrangements, perhaps with a few tweaks.
And nor can anyone the Conservatives replace her with if the Brextremists choose to bring her down.
So the choice is simple - go with the union (perhaps delaying/fudging further and kicking and screaming all the way for media consumption) - or call a GE and risk a Corbyn govt (which will stay in the customs Union) or based on current polling another hung parliament (which will also not have a majority for anything other than staying in a customs union).
This is democracy in action.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Polls suggest that the outcome of this GE is that the electorate give us another minority or coalition govt.
Then what do we do? Keep having GE’s until the electorate give us the ‘right’ decision? Sure I’ve heard that logic before somewhere...
Somewhat ironic that the remainers who didn’t want this situation either voted labour or abstained, resulting in the balance of power being held by the very people they didn’t want to have it.0 -

The conservatives only held onto power because Theresa May hasn't been completely open about her intentions, that is politics for you. Her majority evaporated because the evidence is out there if you want to look. Most people don't want to look, they picked their team and will stick with them no matter how close to relegation they are.
Taking everything into consideration, there was no possible better outcome for the election. For me racism is racism. I do not understand why anti semitism is being called out separately.

Antisemitism is weird because somehow it has been corrupted into meaning "jew hatred", when semite includes Arabs and Assyrians. Hating someone for their religion is not racism, but it is discrimination. It's a hard sell at the moment to ban all discrimination because 52% of the country voted for it in a referendum.0
