Brexit, the economy and house prices part 5

Why are we raking over history. The Ireland acquisition was about 7-800 years ago years ago, and I understood it was the Normans anyway. OK, the brits continued, but not so long ago the part of Ireland we still "occupy" was given a vote as to whether they wished to remain British, and they chose to do so.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

PS, looks to me as new thread needs creating to discuss the war!
I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most nations have a shady history, ours is just worse than a lot of them. Makes me raise an eyebrow when people think Brexit will be ok because we had a rich history (rich on the back of things like slavery, genocide and opium trade).
Knowing history helps us prevent making the same mistakes again and again and again, but can't tell us that much about the future. Brexit may be a success, but it'll be because of our current skill base and not because we lead the world a hundred years ago.0 -

I don’t think anyone is denying our nations mixed history, just merely reacting to the accusation that Brexit is somehow a manifestation of that history. Another example of remain voters maliciously imagining the motivations of leave voters just to make themselves feel better.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -
The remainers do tend to do a lot of projecting don't they.0

There is nothing like a bit of white guilt first thing in the morning :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
No white guilt - the past is the past, and I don't think any of us need to feel bad about it. I'm just adding balance to the "UK was great for hundreds of years and we can be great again without the EU" rhetoric.I don’t think anyone is denying our nations mixed history
I've seen a lot of cherry picked history in justification of how brexit is a great thing. Usually followed by a lot of outrage when pointed out that a lot of the UK's success is based on bad things. It hasn't happened on here in a while so I've no intention of finding any quotes.0 -
I really don’t see the point of all this going back to the past. I would not hold a modern German responsible for what happened in the war as I would someone from the U.K. for something that happened over a 100 years ago.
I wonder if some of remainers here actually know any body who voted leave, I know several in fact most of my friends voted leave and they don’t have the characteristics that some remains here think they have.0 -
According to 'reports'.
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jan/03/britain-in-talks-to-join-the-tpp-to-boost-trade-after-brexitThe government is exploring becoming a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership to stimulate exports after Brexit next March and has held informal discussions with the group. If the proposals go ahead Britain would be the first member of the trade agreement which does not have borders on the Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea.
Need to keep an eye on this. They're so desperate for a brexit success they'll take any deal on any terms with anybody. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The Brexit movement, if you can call it that, is largely a mish mash of jingoism, racism, and throwback anachronistic fantasy that views everything before Suez asa golden heyday of British excellence.
To pretend otherwise is folly and it is doing Brexiteers and the country no favours to allow "harmless nostalgia" to lead us on a course that is putting us seriously at odds with reality.
A very large part of the world has very mixed feelings about the UK, and contrary to popular belief in the Shires, they don't all view their part of the Commonwealth with misty eyed longing for a time when the British arrived to teach them about times tables, proper dress for dinner, and how to build a railway.
The fact that we have a civil service that has been boasting about Empire 2.0 and a foreign secretary who refers to Africans as living in Bongo Bongo Land, doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.
